Anyone go straight to straw cups vs sippy first?

Emily can't quite figure out how to tip up her SafeSippy yet. However, having an older sister around, she is quite adept at the straw action from Horizon MIlk boxes, juice boxes or Abby's Thermos Foogo provided it's open already. Am I missing any kind of tip-it-up milestone if we just go straight to strawcups? I'd like to start slowly weaning her from the bottle since she appears ready. She already eats more food than Abby! I plan on asking at her pedi appt today as far as how much longer to use total formula vs transitioning to whole milk. The research online is pretty divided about oral development between all the choices, extended BFing included which obviously is not an issue for us anymore.

  • Yup. Tommy won't hold the cup up far enough for the water/milk to come out. BeckO was over w/ the boys one day and let me know that Tops was all about CL's straw cup, so I got some at the HEB later that week. He's been a straw cup kinda guy ever since.

  • My son went straight from BF to straw cups. He's 3 now and hasn't had any problems. If straw cups work better than sippy, I say go for it.

  • Yep. Gracie never learned to tip up the sippy, but she learned to suck out of a straw. We only use straw cups. We use these. They are great, but there still is the issue about tipping the cup. When it gets to be less than 1/4 full, you have to tip the cup to get the liquid to the straw. She does not get it and gets really mad. That forces me to put more milk in the cup, which is mostly wasted. Just a thought.
  • I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but it seems like I read somewhere that "they" say it's "better" to skip the sippy cups and go straight to straws. However, I do not recall the reason why or where I read it, so take that with a grain of salt Wink
  • my #1 went straight to straw and never did a sippy. my #2 was all about the sippy and no straw.
  • We went straight to straws, too.  DD didn't comprehend tipping the cup until a few months ago.

  • We didn't sippy.

but fyi the new safe sippys have a straw!

get her a new one and you'll have the straw kit :) H tried sippies, but the leak free ones all required 'biting' and biting to get water = biting to get mama milk = not cool at all dude.

  • We never did sippy cups. We went straight to straws and she was totally fine.  I read it's better for their teeth anyway.  We'll probably do the same thing for Baby N when the time comes.
  • we went straight to straws with both kids.  Our pedi actually recommended skipping the sippy and going straight to straws, something about the straws help with certain sounds and not having to transition away from a sippy cup later.
