Lessons I'm learning from the trick-or-treaters...

  1. If the door doesn't open within 2 seconds of ringing the door bell, start knocking loudly and repeatedly, while also ringing the door bell again.

  2. Even though you've been given a big handful of candy, keep your bag open and ask for more.

  3. Costumes are apparently optional.

  4. Never leave candy out as a self-serve as my neighbours did. While some will live up to the honour code and just take one or two pieces, within an hour two uncostumed teenagers will just dump the entire bowl into the garbage bags they're using as trick-or-treat bags...

And then the most important lesson of the night - Parenting tips from the mother of the year:

As your 10 children crowd around the door, all jostling for treats,  scream at them repeatedly to be careful of the jack-o-lantern as "There's FIRE there", all the while smoking a cigarette I can still smell in my hallway. Then, open your own pillowcase to collect for "my sick kid at home" (funny she said that last year, I remember her) and then hold the pillow case directly over the FIRE you were so worried about 2 seconds before.

Remind me again why I spend my evening waiting around to give out candy to people I don't know?

Oh that sounds awful!  We don't get trick-or-treaters - which I am happy about.  We have candy just in case, which means I will be eating it all when we don't give it away!

Ok WOW...what is with the people in your neighborhood? Meanwhile I got not one trick or treater, now I am feeling the need to eat the kit kats on in the huge bowl on the dinning room table.

I had one mother trick or treating for her infant in a stroller that was a few months old that she didn't even bother to dress up. She told me mommy needs some candy.

Wow, you have some rude trick-or-treaters.  Ours was on Thursday and I sat on my porch and handed out candy to about 100 kids.  It was a lot of fun and pretty much all of the kids actually said trick or treat and thank you which surprised me.

We just moved here, so I had no idea what to expect.  We had tons of teenagers in no costume at all, holding their backpacks open.

We had a family that had two kids with bags, and the mom had two bags- one for a screaming toddler in a stroller (okay) and one for an infant.  Oh, it's also 35 degrees and sleeting here, awesome time for an infant to go outside.

We had a woman come with her son who "just got out of the hospital with croup," but they told her the cold air is good for him.  Okay, I know that cold air is good for croup, but is it a really good idea to take him trick or treating of all things?

This exactly, I'm just hoping the house doesn't get egged as a result.

Oh, I have one to add -

    5. If you like a decoration at someone's house, you should ask if you can have it. And if they say no, ask for something else. And keep asking until your mother, totally embarrassed finally tells you to shut up and say thank you for the candy.

I haven't had any yet---but I'm on the West coast.

And I usually only get maybe 8---we live in Suburbia, but we are tucked away in a corner, so people don't see us.  DH still made me buy a huge bag of candy so he can eat the left overs.

I wanted to, but since we are new to the neighborhood I didn't want to. Plus at first I thought she was with these 2 other kids but turns out she wasn't.
