Parenting books

Since it's parenting styles day - recommend your favorite parenting book. While time outs have been working for us we really do have a lot of discipline issues in our house. Over a year ago I tried Parenting the Strong Willed Child but I think it was too soon and we had a few too many communication limitations to work through the program properly. I'm willing to give it another shot but I'd like to see if anyone else has any suggestions especially those who commented in the time out threads!

Re: Parenting books

  • I started Playful Parenting & really enjoyed it. It was overdue at the library tho & needed to take it back. I need to buy it used on Amazon or elsewhere soon, tho.
  • I am no help as I'm in need of one too. DD is starting to drive me crazy with her tantrums. Hope you find one that works for you.

  • How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk - love it!  It has skills that are applicable for all ages so I imagine I'll be rereading it several times as DS gets older.  I also really like Sleepless in America - it's mostly about sleep but shows how lack of sleep plays out in behavior, etc...  The author also has other books that I've heard recommended but I haven't read them yet.

  • Parenting with Love and Logic is great! We use it with our son and I use it with my kindergartners with lots of awesome success. (couple with the BIST model but so far there are no books out on that that I know of) :-(

Yep.  But I read Unconditional Parenting first (Alfie Kohn is very anti-timeouts), which is more the reasoning behind.  How to Talk so Kids Will Listen is like the companion that's filled with the actual how-tos, and none of it is cheesy or ridiculously unnatural.  Like Lotte, I plan to keep it in my bedside table and revisit every six months or so.  It's FABULOUS and very quick and easy to read.

There are also workshops you can take from lots of differently named but similar groups, like Positive Parenting or Non-violent Communication.  And in LA, the Echo Center.
