Knees are crazy sore after running...

Hey runners or exercisers in general - I've never had knee pain before and I'm having major PP knee pain that's been hanging around for a couple days.  It started in right after my run the other day (only 3 m.) and I've been taking it easy since then but I'm not seeing too much improvement. Any advice to make it go away and not come back the next time I run???

P.S. I am aware that it's probably a combination of extra weight and still-loose joints... just wondering if there's a way to make it bearable for working out.

TIA!

Re: Knees are crazy sore after running...

  • What type of knee pain is it?  General ache behind the kneecap?  A stabbing pain in one side?

I'm guessing it's just tendinitis.  Applying warm compresses usually helps me feel better.  Some ibuprofen and taking a week off then slowly building back up are also good bets.

If it persists, I'd get checked out by a doctor.  I've needed physical therapy to overcome some knee pain caused by issues with my ITB

  • Assuming there's nothing torn or strained in your situation, you can go easy on it for a bit and take a little extra care.... so for running, maybe this could include making sure your shoes have good support, running on soft ground vs. cement, and warming up/cooling down with a little extra attention.

  • My knees always hurt after running outside on the sidewalk but never hurt on the treadmill so if you were running outside, try a treadmill. If they hurt on a treadmill, I'd say try indoor cycling or the elliptical.

  • I was thinking maybe new shoes might be in order as well.  Maybe some with extra cushioning.

  • Could you try the elliptical for a little while, and ease your knees back into running with the low-impact exercises?

  • I had knee pain and wearing jumpers knee straps solved it.  They're like 8 bucks a piece and sold at drug stores.  They are the neoprene bands that you strap just under your kneecap.  Takes a while to figure out the appropriate tightness, but really helps

If something hurts, it means something is wrong.

Unless you've been checked by a doctor or physical therapist and they recommend a support device, I wouldn't just mask the pain with a cheap cover up.  You could have muscle imbalances, poor form, or other problems like over training that need to be addressed.  By not dealing with the original cause and only covering up the symptom of knee pain, you could be doing more damage in the long term.

  • Yeah, I am headed for the doctor in the a.m.... rest, ice, compression, and elevation just aren't cutting it. ;) I'm thinking tendonitis but we'll see.  Thanks for all the advice, ladies!
  • I had horrible knee pain after DS was born and I ended up seeing a physical therapist. Turns out my knee pain was due to weak hip muscles. I started doing some hip strengthening exercises and that totally solved the problem. I still have no idea how much pregnancy/extra weight contributed, but I was so relieved that the solution was relatively simple. GL!
