Extremely low blood pressure

I haven't been feeling well the last few days, Migraines, nausea dizziness. Called the Dr Wednesday and they gave me a presc for the migraines and had me start checking my BP ( I had issues at with High BP at the end of my last pregnancy). Well Wednesday my BP was pretty much normal but it's been going down ever since. I feel lousy, still have a headache, dizzy nauseous ( SP). I took my BP this morning before I left for work at 10:30 and it was 71/49...really low. I went to work anyways but they made me call the Dr's office and I have an appt at 2:15. I'm just really nervous because I don't know what this could mean?  Has anyone had any trouble with really low BP?

Re: Extremely low blood pressure

  • Its typically runs lower in early/mid pregnancy, but not that low!

Your bp monitor could be off too. I got one and it was always super low so I had to return it.

I only had issues with super low BP after I delivered ds and all the BP meds I was on caused it to drop too significantly. I almost passed out in the bathroom at ihop. It was terrible, dizzy, nausea, headache. bad bad bad.

I'm so sorry you are not feeling well and I hope you get better soon! Keep us posted!

  • I always have 80/60.  That is genetic for me, and mine is typically a tiny bit higher during pregnancy.  90/60 or so.  It might be nothing...but if you get dizzy or anything make sure someone drives you to the dr.'s.

  • Thanks Sarah, my BP does tend to be on the low side when I'm not pregnant, but never that low for me either!  I did use the cuff on DH last night and his was normal for him so I don't think it's the cuff, but who knows. I just hope it's something that can be easliy fixed.
  • Not saying that it's not that low, but I never trust the machine. You can go to the drug store or walmart and get a BP kit which has a cuff and stethoscope in it. Have your DH or someone take your blood pressure, it is very easy to do. You could even google or youtube it I'm sure. It is more reliable, and A LOT less likely to be wrong.

On a side note - as a paramedic, we are not allowed to use BP machines, we always have to do them manually to ensure an accurate measurement, machines are just not reliable.

  • I have low BP when not pregnant.  As previous posters said, it will drop further in pregnancy.  I get lots of dizzy spells.  Eat lots of protein and up your sodium intake.  That will help.  If it gets to be dangerously low, the right thing is to see a doctor.

    Good luck!
