After a character?

So im pregnant with my first child and Im also an aspiring author. When I fond out I was pregnant in early September, I was in the begining stages of pre-writing this story that I've been crafting for a while. So as I was drafting up the second main female protaganist, whom I named Andaleis; I was struck by an idea. I really liked the name Andalei and after discussing it with my fiance, we decided that it would be a good name if we had a daughter.

So now we've decided that if we're having a girl, that her name will be Andalei Leann or Andalei Marie

But what i really wanna know, is if its a good idea to name a child after a character that I created. I mean, it seems that it would be better than naming a child after an already popular character like those from "Harry Potter" or "Twilight"....

Re: After a character?

  • Nicholas Sparks has named characters after all five of his kids.  I don't really see the difference between naming the child first or the character, as long as you are the one naming both. (as opposed to naming after Bella Swan or Hermione Granger)

  • I like the sentiment, but the name is awful, imo. Sorry. Is it ahn-duh-lay, or ann-duh-lay or ann-duh-lee or ahn-duh-lee? Or none of the above? It looks made up, and my mind immediately jumps to the first pronunciation I listed there. And that makes me think of the Roadrunner.

All I can say is thank goodness for editors. I find it unlikely you have much future as a writer, since you seemingly don't know how to use apostrophes to denote a contraction and misspelled three words in a 2.1 paragraph post--as someone who works in publishing, let me just say, grammar is really important.

While I see no problem with naming a child after a character, Andalei is an invented name and phonetically reads ahn-dah-lay, as in the Spanish slang term '?ndale' which means, "hurry up" or, "come on." Do you really want to name your child Hurry-Up?

  • All I can think of is Andelasia in Enchanted. And I think you're overthinking the character part of it.
  • It's not the link to a story you wrote that would bother me; it's the name itself. Like a pp mentioned, this looks as if it would sound like the Spanish word andale. Arriba, arriba!

And that makes me think of the Roadrunner.

Don't be ridiculous. It is clearly a reference to Speedy Gonzales, not the Roadrunner!

Ah, of course! I was 99% sure I had it wrong, but I thought, "Meh, I'll go with it."

  • To be clear:

Naming your child after a character you created is better than naming her after a "Twilight" character.

    BUT...

Naming your child a real name is better than naming her a name that you made up.

So it goes: Real name > made up name on a character you created > name of a "Twilight" character. Got it?

Also, I agree with what everyone says about "andale", but wanted to add that if it is supposed to be pronounced an-da-LIE, that's not much better. It sounds like "And I lie".
