VBAC

Old, but here's my twin VBAC story

Tuesday night at 6pm I was in the bathroom when I heard a weird noise in my body. I stood up and kept peeing and peeing. I kept thinking - WHY am I still peeing? OMG, I can't stop!! Wait a second.. maybe it's my water.. and it was!  The noise must have been my water breaking - it POURED OUT - I had no idea how much was in there!
So I called the Dr on call and she said to come in. At this point I was not feeling any contractions. Being the SLACKER that I am, I ran around straddling a towel and packing with 1 hand. My Mother-In-Law was at work and started on her way home to watch my 16 month old daughter.
By the time we arrived at the hospital it was 8pm. I still wasn't having any contractions, but they wanted to admit me and put me on monitors right away.. The babies looked fine, and they did and u/s to make sure they were still head down - they were. No idea about how far along the labor was, as they didn't check me, they were waiting for signs, contractions, etc. Contractions started to happen at around 10pm and by 11 I asked for them to call in a doula. By 1 I was in a lot of pain and I threw up a few times, they were 4 minutes apart. I asked for the epidural. It was delicious!! At that point they checked me and I was only 3cm! OMG! IT felt THAT BAD at only 3? I laughed when I heard that but as long as they gave it to me I didn't care. The night was uneventful, I was able to rest and felt very little, just slight pressure when the contractions came. in the morning I felt the contractions a bit more and they checked me, I was 7cm. The poor doula, she was called in and I had the epidural a few hours later!! She had to stay ALL NIGHT!  By 8am I was 10cm. I was so happy b/c my Dr was coming on a 8am. He had a c/s scheduled, so after he took a look he decided to let me hang at 10cm for an hour while he did hte c/s. As it turned out, there was an emergency and he couldn't deliver my babies. So in walked another Dr from the practice who I really liked as well. (and at that point I would have let the garbage man deliver these kids..)
So at 9:20 the crew arrived - 11 people!! They initially were going to have me labor in the operating room b/c it was a twin delivery, but the Dr decided that I could continue right where I was!! I was surprised and very happy. The ipod was blasting, the room was buzzing with people and my doula kindly reminded the crew that I did NOT want any cheerleading. Then it started, I started pushing, I pushed for 25 minutes, the doula was a GREAT coach, and so was my husband. It was AMAZING. At 9:49 out came baby A, crying. It was an amazing sound! I didn;t get to hold him right away though, it was on to baby B. I pushed for about 18 minutes and at 10:08 out came baby B. He was having trouble breathing, you could hear it. After they showed him to me they whisked him away to NICU. I got ot hold baby A for a bit and then had the pleasure of being sewn up. 2nd degree tearing - probably the only bad experience of the whole thing. I felt like it took FOREVER, and it hurt more than the delivery itself!
The crew was very excited, they don't get many twin vbacs and very rarely do they have one in a regular delivery room. I had a student that was seeing his first twin delivery - he was so excited! The Dr said she was impressed at the control of my pushing and that I was very quiet and able to listen to her directions. The crew also loved having the music playing - it wasn't at all like I imagined. I pictured a sterile, serious environment and it was more like a party where I happened to be naked and pushing babies out. I kind of remember mid delivery yelling, "I feel like someone should be coming in with a birthday cake any minute - it looks like a party in here!" and everyone laughed.
One of the nicest parts was that afterwards, where ever I went on the L&D floor staff stopped me and said that they heard about my delivery, a twin bac in a L&D room, they heard how good it was, what a great job I did. I felt so proud - I didn't expect to feel proud about it, I can't explain. It was such a god experience and such a surprise to me that I felt the way I did.
We didn't choose who was who right away, although as soon as I saw baby A I said, "OMG, he looks just like you!" to my husband. So that led me to choose Andrew for baby A, and Garrett for baby B. My husband was in awe of the delivery to the point where he said, "after what you just did, you can name them whatever you want!" I was surprised that he was able to watch the delivery - he is more of a stay above the waist kind of guy, but the Dr encouraged him to look, and hearing his reactions made the whole thing easier and gave me a lot of encouragement.
