High-Risk Pregnancy

Cervix length at 1.5 and almost 30 weeks

I've been getting monitored for a short cervix and it's been holding steady until yesterday when it was at 1.5cm.  I don't have any funneling or dialation which is good but they put me on a medication to stop contractions b/c apparently I've been having them and didn't know it.

The Dr told me to stop working and put me on what I guess would be a light to moderate bedrest.  I'm allowed up to shower, use the bathroom, do some light cleaning and I can go to my baby shower but he doesn't want me on my feet for long periods of time to shop or anything.

I go back next Thursday for a follow up scan and tomorrow they are doing the swab test to check if I'll go into labor in the next 10 days.

Anyone else in a similar situation?  I'm taking it a day at a time b/c I know every day is great...it's just nerve wracking

Re: Cervix length at 1.5 and almost 30 weeks

  • I'm a short cervix success story, but I had an emergency cerclage placed at 19 weeks. I wanted to tell you to hang in there, do what the dr asks, and you will get through it! I had a positive fFN (not a false positive either) but it was a true blessing. The drs told me to disregard it that false positives are common and only 3% are actually correct, well I was in that 3%. It gave me time to gather my things, mentally prepare, and hurry like no other getting the house ready. I went into PTL at 31 weeks but they got it stopped!

Bedrest sucks, but its not the end of the world...and soon you'll hold your LO and forget allll about this craziness!!

  • Thanks... my short cervix wasn't discoverd until 24 weeks b/c at 20 weeks I was at 4cm.  I go for the FFN test tomorrow morning so I'm hoping it comes back negative...so I can relax a little...but atleast I know they can take different measures if it doesn't come back negative.

  • I too am a short cervix girl...At 16 weeks I measured 4 cm & at 20 was down to 2 cm. I did have a cerclage placed but, my cervix shrank further, to 1.4 cm. This is where it stayed until the cerclage was removed at 36 weeks. I am 38 w 1 d today and holding steady. I am fortunate not to have experienced PTL but, did lots of research just in case. There is a lot they can do to fend it off. It sounds like your Dr. is on top of things & you have a good plan in place.

I agree with PP; lay low, do what the Dr. recommends & stay off your feet as much as possible. Good Luck! And you are right---every day does count!

  • also... every day in the tummy is 3 less nicu days!!!! This gave me a ton of motivation to stay flat despite desperately wanting to get up!
  • I also measured extremely short, at 0.9cm when I was 26w4d. I had been being monitored for short cervix and had a rapid drop over one week to that length and was placed on strict bedrest.I never took any medication or had the opportunity for a cerclage given how far along I was.  I remained stable at about 1cm for the next 6 weeks, as they stopped checking my cervix at 32 weeks. I am now looking into the possiblity of induction/c-section in the next few weeks due to how big this baby is looking at 36 weeks! It is very possible to have a success story, my peri told me that she went over her due date herself with a cervix measuring 1cm. Good luck to you! :)
  • Thanks for all the  positive stories....I was told about the whole every day in the belly is 2-3 less in the NICU and that is very motivating.  I've been off my feet for the last two days other then to use the bathroom or move from the bed to couch.  I do have my shower this weekend and plan on sitting in a chair the whole time and not moving..yeah I'm sure I'll have to explain to everyone but oh well :)

  • When I was pregnant with my DD I was 1.5 with funneling at 30 weeks.  I had similar orders (light duty) but did continue to work my desk job.  I was not put on any tocolytics that pregnancy.

I ended up delivering at 35w4d due to pPROM and she was perfectly heathy (tiny).  One thing I am glad I did that pregnancy was have the steroid shots to help mature her lungs.  I had it done at about 30 weeks.

This pregnancy I took 17P injections from 16-36 weeks and Procardia (a tocolytic) from 30-35 weeks.  At 31 weeks my cervix was about 2.5 so it did better.  I am now 37w5d so I made it full term this time.

From the sounds of your situation (with no funneling) you have a very very good chance of making it to term.  Good luck!

Thank you!!  That is VERY reassuring!!

  • At my 20 week ultrasound they discovered my cervix was 1 cm, I was funneling and contracting. I had an emergency cerclage, and  was put on strict bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy. I delivered at 35W, 5 days. Bed rest was HARD, but it worked. Stay flat as much as you can and drink your water. GL!
  • The Dr. discovered my short cervix at 15 weeks and was immediately put on strict bed rest. My cervix now at 18 weeks is measuring .6! I am only a couple weeks in and i am really about to lose my mind. I have a very long way to go too.

I am at 15 weeks and 6 days and last week the doctor told me my cervix had gone from 4.6 to 3.2 and I was to be monitored every 2 weeks!  I am scared I will go into PTL and will lose the baby!  Did they put in a cerclage or just strict bedrest?  Did you know you may have an incompetent cervix before?

My shortened cervix didn't happen until 24 weeks, to far along to do a cerclage...at my 20 week scan it was 4cm...they don't consider my cervix incompetent just dynamic.  I asked to be checked b/c my sister went into pre term labor with my niece at 33 weeks for no reason and it just so happens that they found this.  At my 29 week scan I was down to 1.6 but have been holding steady there for 3 weeks now....I was taken off work when it got down to 1.6 and put on bedrest.  Not strict bed rest, I am alloweed up to get something to eat, shower and even go out to dinner aslong as I'm sitting.

I hope everything works out for you, just listen to your Dr....as much as laying down all day sucks I'm sucking it up....I'm currently at almost 32 weeks which is good and hoping to hang in there for another 4 weeks if not longer.  I'm currently going for weekly scans and I'm on procadia and progesterone shots
