Cloth Diapering

snaps vs. velcro closure

I read that snaps last longer than velcro. However, is there any downside to have snaps vs. velcro?

  • Velcro is more like disposable diapers, so it's pretty much all my husband will reach for.  I feel like I get a more personalized fit with velcro.

Pretty much this. My husband absolutely cannot get the fit of snaps right, no matter how much he tries, and he'll find a way to get me to fasten the diaper if it's snaps.

And snaps can sometimes be harder to get a good fit with, especially if you have a baby with chunky thighs and a small waist.

  • Snap covers stay looking new longer, IMO.  Velcro can get worn looking pretty quickly.  Velcro allows for an infinite fit though.  I find myself reaching for our velcro covers a lot right now because Baby Bee waist size is right in between snaps; one is too loose while the next is too tight.

  • I agree with PP.  You can definitely get a better fit with velcro/aplix, and it's easier to get on a squirmy baby.  However, with snaps you never have to deal with velcro chains in the laundry (where the tabs stick to one another), and most babies cannot figure out how to unsnap snaps.
  • Thanks for the input!

Decisions, decisions!!!! I don't know which one to get!!

  • I've also read that it's easier for older babies to rip off velcro diapers.
  • So far I like the velcro way better.  I hang dry my covers/pockets, and I make sure the tabs are closed in the washer, so I don't get many of the velcro chains, and so far the velcro is staying nice.  I have some with snaps, but DS has skinny thighs and a pot belly, so it's hard to get a good fit with snaps.  I may like them more in the future though.  It's really too bad, I really like the FB Perfect Sizes,  but I can't get a good fit around the legs, so I rarely use them.

Oh, and you can also replace the velcro on most diapers without too much of a problem.  Some companies even provide free replacement velcro.
