2nd Trimester

What could it be?

The last couple days I have been having a lot of back pain which I just assumed was from the pregnancy. Last night it got really bad... I couldn't lay in one position... I had to keep getting up (and kept my poor husband up in the process!) and moving around. I tried a heating pad which felt really good but I was afraid to use it for an extended amount of time.

Today has been horrible, I can't sit, stand or lay down and get comfortable!

I called the Dr. and the nurse asked me:

Have you been urinating more = yes but I go through stages where I will have to urinate all the time so I haven't thought much about it.

Are you urinating a lot when you go = no, not as much as normal but I am drinking a TON of water!

Does it hurt when you urinate = it does burn a bit but nothing terrible... however I feel a lot of pressure when I urinate.

The nurse kind of hinted at she thought it might be a bladder/kidney infection so I am going in today at 4:15 to have it checked out... my real question is... does anyone else know what could be causing the intense pressure I feel when going to the bathroom? Its enough pressure to cause me to wonder if I am going to have the baby in the toilet! As soon as I get up I am fine and the pressure generally goes away within a few minutes! Could it be related to the bladder/kidney infection I possibly have?

Re: What could it be?

  • It sounds to me like you have a UTI. I hope you feel better soon!

ETA: It's entirely possible that the UTI is making you have BH contractions, and that is the cause of the pressure you are feeling.

  • I think that a bladder/kidney infection is usually the first thing they look for because it's the simplest to diagnose or rule out.  Early on I was having extreme back pain (not able to walk more than just around the house), and they said it's probably a UTI.  After complaining for another week they had me come in and did an ultrasound to make sure it wasn't eptopic.  Turns out my ovary had folded behind my uterus and was pressed up against my spine...and every time it hit my spine it was like it was bruising it again, hence the pain.  Luckily, they said it will probably correct itself and they let me take something stronger (aleve) for the pain.  There are so many things it could be, hopefully your doc will do enough to check for you.  Good luck and hope you feel better!

  • Thanks everyone... hopefully this will explain everything!

I never even thought about the pressure being BH, I guess because this is my first pregnancy and I don't know exactly what BH feel like normally. Thanks for mentioning that...

  • I was in the hospital for preterm labor at 27 weeks and it turns out it was triggered by a UTI. super painful. hope you fell better.
  • Sounds like a UTI- I was diagnosed with one this weekend after heading to the emerg I was in so much pain!
