Books and Toddlers

I feel like I have read Where is Baby's Belly Button? and I Love you Through and Through about 1209321093210 times this week. I think I might hide them so we move on to something different :).

Re: Books and Toddlers

  • lol same!

I was going batty so I went to Goodwill yesterday and got 6 new books.  I'm an expert on construction equipment now.

  • Loading the player...
  • Haha, same for us!!

She's constantly saying "read again".  I have to tell her that certain books need nap time to rest.

  • we have toooonns of books, but it's always the same dang ones he picks! He doesn't seem to like them if they don't rhyme.
  • haha Andrew does that but then I just say "We already read that book, please pick a different book" and he will!!

But until he cooperates with that....maybe you could hide the ones you're tired of. I did that for a while :-)

  • Yep....I believe I have successfully memorized all of the Sandra Boynton books. NOT THE HIPPOTAMOUS....::dead::

O.M.G. Kathy...I tried to hide it last night and he was so mad. I didn't think that a 12.5 month old would really know...but he did. He kept throwing all the other books out of my hands and screaming. When DH walked in with the book that I had hid in our room asking, 'what was this doing in the sock drawer?' it was all over from there. DS saw it and just HAD to have me read it...again...and again....and again...

  • We rotate between Goodnight Moon,  The Very Busy Spider (which sometimes I skip pages), Very Hungry Catipillar, Some Simba $1 book from Target (very short and good for naps), and 5 little monkeys.  I may need some new ones soon!!!!
  • lol!

andrew's new thing is that if he sees a car or truck on a page, he wants to keep going back to that page.

He discovered that is one, not super obvious, in Birthday Monsters.  There is a truck in 2 pages of that book that he didn't know where there.  Now he is *obsessed* with those pages!!!  he'll flip through the book hunting for the trucks!

  • I have "The Monster at the End of this Book" completely memorized. It's Paige's favorite.

My frustration with books is that she begs (and begs and begs) for books, I'll get some, she'll pick one, climb onto my lap, let me read two pages, and then grab the book and throw it. And then pick it up and throw it again. And then eat it. And then beat the cat with it. And then kiss it. And then ask for another book.

Like, I love reading to her, but it's like her attention span (even for super short books) is absolutely zero right now.

  • Lol, Claire will flip to the pages with animals and wave and say "hi" over and over again.  But, most of our books have or are about animals, so it's quite an ordeal.  :-)  She LOVES books.  It's so cute to say, "Claire, where's a book?"  She'll look all over until she finds one and brings it to us to read.
  • Ahhh, yet another reason I love this board - because we all have so many common experiences, and it's so nice to hear other mamas complain about the same things!

Just like the rest of you, we have a dozen or so books that we rotate. I'm sick to death of the books we read.

And like Brenda & Paige, Ella is famous for bringing us a book, begging to sit in our lap, and then two pages in will chuck the book to the floor and go get another one.

  • And if I'm complaining, I'll also add that we absolutely cannot let her hold a paperback book (she's obsessed with crushing the pages)... and she is going through a phase right now where she loves to close board books in the wrong spot, just to see if they'll close. Loves it.

We literally have 5-6 books with no spine left.

Grrr, us too!  The page crushing has gotten much better but closing it wrong... All the paper paged books have a special place .  And hiding doesn't work, she just says the title over and over until we read it!

I'm so glad I'm not alone.  I never get to actually finish a book.

  • When did they start to get into books?  Luke just wants to grab it from me and eat it.

I'm not sure!  We read to andrew when he was in the NICU and although he was young he seemed to like it so we just kept doing it.  He's always loved it.  I would just keep trying!

Rowan liked it, then went through a stage where he hated it and didn't care and now he loves it. So he'll eventually like books :)

We put all of the non-board books on top of her chest.  She can't see them and trust me, we have plenty of other books to deal with.

    The girl is OBSESSED.

However, I found out last night that I can read Dr. Suess's ABC up to the letter R without even looking at the book.  I'm not sure if that's more impressive or depressing.

  • I can "read" Goodnight Moon and The Groing to Bed Book without picking up the book.  sometimes when Nick is fighting bedtime, he pushes the books away.  I just start to say them out loud and he looks at me like "what on earth, how are you doing that?" It is pretty funny. :)

LOL! Jalen does THIS all the time! I had to recently hide "Peek A Who?" I was reading it over and over again. Jalen was throwing all of his books out of their book bucket looking for it. Landon likes to go back to look at the certain truck or animal. It does get frustrating when you are trying to read and they just want to do something else with the book. :-)
