I am planning my nursery ideas and I have no clue what the safety rules are for a crib! Either way I am going to go with an iron crib but I wanted to do an antique and refinish it. If we have a girl I am going to do vintage chic with lots of flowers and chandeliers. If we have a boy we are doing a kind of western antique room with an old wagon wheel on the wall and a big antique rocking horse (think deep reds and browns). But then I hear all of this about width measurments and recalls and I feel overwhelmed! What are the rules for cribs??
Re: OK I feel like a bad mom...
I think if you buy any standard crib sold in a major store you will be fine.
The problem comes along when buy old stuff from garage sales and vintage shops. I would just try to get the look you're going for by purchasing a crib through a reputable shop and brand name. They have tons of options these day.
and cute themes!!!
I don't want to sound judgemental here but now is not the time to go antique to match your decorating theme. You just can't be sure of the structural integrity of an antique crib.
There are great iron cribs that look antique that fit the safety guidelines and are not old. My DH and I were thinking about the Casablanca Premier iron cribs for our LO.

If you buy an old one and refinish it you still have the problem of lead paint that you may leave behind even after refinishing.
I hope the link helps!

Checked out the link, whoa! Saw a beautiful crib but it was like $3000!!! Yikes! They are all so pretty though.
Plus, you wouldn't want to be doing any of that refinishing yourself- exposure to lead paint isn't safe for anyone, much less pregnant women. Like Hyfagal said, this is not the time to put form over function- go with a reputable store bought brand even if it means compromising your aesthetics.
Thanks!!
Lol a lady at this store I shop in was telling me that I need to hang a chandelier over the baby's crib! My only thought was ok ya and then its gonna fall and smash my baby! Definitely nothing will be hanging where it can injure my little one! Truth be told I doubt my child will ever spend a night in its room until it is almost two. Our master is downstairs and our two other rooms are upstairs so most likely baby will be in our room for a long time.
