2nd Trimester

Swollen ankles... got 'em?

It started yesterday. I looked down and my left ankle was really swollen - more than my right, which was also swollen, but only a little. I figured that maybe the dinner we had the night before had a lot of sodium, so if I went easy on the salt and drank a lot of water, it would go down. I put my feet up for a while, and it did go down again. But, today at the same time, POOF - they were swollen again.

I checked my blood pressure - which is still normal, so it's nothing related to that.

Anyone else experiencing this early - mid second tri? {hoping not to feel like the only Sta-Puff Marshmallow man at this point}

  • My hands are the only things swelling.

  • it's more my feet than ankles. It was my left foot as well. But that leg from the knee down is kind of tinglly all the time. It's weird. I just drink lots of water and keep it up as much as possible.

  • Not to alarm you, but definitely mention this to your OB next time you see him. While swelling is pretty normal, when one leg swells more than the other, it can signal something else.

    I only know this from my first PG when someone had this problem on here and their OB said to always inform them when this happens.

  • try an epsom salt footbath.....if that doesn't help I would check for pre-e with your doc.
  • Me too.  Started last week.  Right one gets a bit more swollen than the left. It's a lovely look...

    Wasn't freaking out too much because all the books said if the swelling went down overnight it wasn't a huge deal, just kinda normal.  I plan on telling my OB at my next appointment though.  And am slamming more water than I was before.

  • I would deff tell your ob especially if 1 is more swollen then the other. At my apt a week ago I mentioned my ankles where starting to swell at the end of the day when I work (i stand 9 hours a day) and she said it is not very normal for swelling to start this early, unless I had preeclampsia which they are currently testing me for. My blood pressure has been higher the last 2 visits, and this last time there was protein in my urine and after i told her about my ankles she got concerned more. High bp isnt the only sign of preeclampsia so you should talk to your ob to make sure everything is ok this early on!

  • I ate a LOAD of very salty boiled peanuts a couple of weekends ago, and my ankles and feet swelled terribly for a couple of days. I was concerned, but once all that salt was out of my system, they went back to normal.

  • My doctor said that if you eat a lot of sodium one day it can take three days for all of it to get out of your system.

  • Thanks all! I will call the OB tomorrow just to let him know, but will also chug water and keep the tootsies elevated. Hopefully it was just the evilness of a Friendly's Buffalo Chicken Melt sammie on Sunday night that has my system all haywire.

  • I'm having the same issue. It's mostly my feet and some in my ankles. It goes down some when I rest/sleep, but they're always somewhat swollen. I mentioned it to my OB at my last appointment (last week). My bloodpressure was good and I had no other signs of anything critical, but she's keeping a close eye on me. I'm going back in tomorrow for her to check my blood pressure again, and she's actually measuring my ankles to see if they're becoming more swollen or not lol.

  • My ankles totally swell too. I load up even more on water and raise them. DH is nice enough to massage them pretty often too.

  • I have major Stay-Puft Marshmellow Man ankles and feet.  Mine tend to swell up after a lot of time either on my feet or sitting at my desk with little walk-around time.  Like PP's have said, keep an eye on the symmetry and in particular, any pains behind your knees because blood clots could be an issue (I just got this speech from my doc on Monday when I showed her my chubby little piggies).  And definitely throw your feet up above your head on massive amounts of pillows!  Its a good excuse to sit down and slow down.
