Success after IF

how do you cope emotionally when your LO suffers?

i had a rough morning taking aaron home from his doctor's appointment--he started crying as soon as we left, and even though i stopped in the doctor's lobby to feed him, he SCREAMED the whole 30 minutes home. the stroller's top was closed because it was really windy, and i think he was partly freaked out because he thought he was alone in there. it just broke my heart. i felt horrible for an hour or so after we got home--it wasn't exactly guilt, because there wasn't that much that i could have done to improve the situation, but it was so so painful to see him so upset!

i know it's inevitable to suffer when our LOs suffer--does anyone have any advice on how to cope emotionally with that kind of mommy pain?

  • I have no real advice. But what I have realized is that Jake will cry/scream when he is overwhelmed. I have read in many of the parenting books that the crying can be when they are just over stimulated and they need to just let it out. I try and remeber that it's a big world out there and they have been in such a secluded place for so long that all these new adventrues (ie, riding in the car, doctors, shots other children crying, birds, music playing in the car ect) is just a lot for them to process.

When I am in the car though and he starts to scream I sometimes just let him do it. I know terrible mom here, cause I know that the motion of the car will put him to sleep.  But  I also have stopped and pulled over to put his paci in.

  • It is never fun to watch your child suffer but I will tell you that it gets easier with time and the older that they get. In those first few months they get over stimulated very easily. You did everything you could and remember that about 5 minutes after it happens, he has forgotten about it.
