dun dun dun BUMPERS

So, I got a crib set that came with bumpers and I put them up. And every time bumpers are brought up (well you ladies know) it's a mixture of "NOOO!" and "you're going to kill your baby". Here's my question, whose using bumpers?

Re: dun dun dun BUMPERS

  • We'll be using a breathable bumper.
  • Loading the player...
  • We plan to use the breathable mesh bumpers. If the set we pick comes with bumpers, I was going to use them to make pillows or window treatments.
  • Breathable bumpers only.  We had a bumper for DD that came with the set.  We used it for decoration until she slept in her crib.  IMO I think I wasted my money on it!  We won't do that for this one.

  • At first I'm probably not going to use them, but after baby gets older (but before they could use em to crawl out) I might put them in if I see alot of reaching arms and legs through the bars.

  • No baby has ever died from not having a bumper. Babies HAVE died from having them. They are unecessary, we will not use.
  • We skipped the crib set and went with a toddler set. It didn't include a bumper and it was half the price.

    We use a breathable bumper.

  • We bought a bedding set that included a bumper with DS. I only used a breathable bumper when he was sleeping in the crib and still small. However, once he got to 9 mos or so and started to pull up, but still wasn't steady on his feet, I was very happy to have a padded bumper, just in case he fell usually the bumper would catch the fall as opposed to the wood rails. So even if you don't plan to use it from birth on, it's not a complete waste of money - there are stages where its safe and useful.

  • Can someone please explain to me what actually goes in the crib then? Is it just the fitted crib sheet? My neighbor just told me that babies can suffocate with blankets. And pillows/stuffed animals are out, right? I have absolutely NO idea what i'm doing here and I don't want my baby's crib to be the sleep equivalent of a pirhana tank.

Just the baby and the fitted sheet.

I asked my mom how the baby stays warm and she said "snuggly pj's." And then bought me a few baby books, because clearly it's time to stop being in denial and learning about this stuff.

  • Bumpers came with my crib set, but I bought it anyway because I love the fabric and the main blanket...which will be most likely used on the floor for play time at first, but is big enough to transition to toddlerhood, so we will get use out of it.  As for the bumpers I am going to cut them up and make window treatments out of them, that way it co-ordinates with the blanket!

  • I've been using regular crib bumpers with dd since we brought her home from the hospital and plan on using them with this baby too.

this is definitely right, nothing goes in the crib except the baby and the fitted sheet. in the beginning they will be swaddled in a receiving blanket and this is okay because it is tight around them and not a suffocation risk. a lot of babies want to be swaddled until they are around 3 or 4 mos old, but of course this can vary by baby. after that you can either make sure their pajamas are super warm (layers work well), or you can use something like this.

we used these from about 3 mos until about 15 mos and LOVED them. even though regular blankets can be used once they are close to a year or so, they kick them off constantly so they are worthless for warmth.

  • I used a bumper with DS and bought a breathable one once he started to roll over...I was planning on using it again for baby # 2 but found it to be a PIA everytime I had to take the mattress out to change the crib sheet so I will prob use just a breathable one for baby # 2. Bumpers don't cause SIDs...SIDS is caused by not having enough airflow in the the area where the baby sleeps or by a baby sufficating due to sleeping against something that doesn't have airflow (a pillow or parents co-sleeping without having the proper knowledge. Some people feel that bumper may hinder that airflow that why they say they are unsafe.

Just out of curiosity what baby books did you buy?

This, unless I decide to just by all separate (fitted sheets, skirt, mesh bumper).

I know you weren't asking me, but I have WTE the First Year (which I CLEARLY have not opened yet), and a friend recommended the Girlfriends' Guide to Baby Gear. She said that one was a great source for what you absolutely need, don't need, should borrow instead of buy, etc. (Still waiting for that one to come in the mail too. Ha! I have a lot of reading to do.)

  • We put the breathable bumper on the registry. I also bought a bedding set which came with a bumper - but I am sure I will find another use for it.

    This!

We used them when she was super tiny & swaddled.  She didn't move!  Once she started moving, we replaced with mesh bumpers.  We plan to do the same with #2.

  • I'm using one.  With a crib sheet.  Otherwise, I'd plop my kid on a cement slab and call it a day (totally kidding).  I don't believe that bumpers kill your baby.

  • We have decided to buy separates instead of a set since the only sets we liked are around $400 and totally not worth it for 3-4 pieces that we could buy separate and similar for less then half the money. So we just put a breathable bumper on the registry, im not dead set on using it or not. Just figured we would see if we feel its needed when the baby is here since he will be sleeping in the arms reach co sleeper bassinet for awhile anyway.

  • We used a bumper with our first 2 and will use with our 3rd. Unfortunately, our babies haven't exactly lived in their cribs, lol. Co-slept with #1 for what felt like years....#2 used a bassinet for a while and then slept with me some. But we will see. If this baby sleeps and naps in his crib I have considered replacing his decorative bumper with a breathable bumper.

  • We used a reg bumper with DS and had no problems with it.  Honestly, he didn't go into the crib until 5 months, and then the bumper was out by 7 months because he was pulling up and trying to stand on it.  Biggest waste of $ ever.

This time around, we'll get a breathable one.  And no, you shouldn't put anything other than a fitted sheet and baby in the crib.  Warm PJs or swaddled is fine to keep them warm.  :)
