2+ moms older LO's 1st bday cake

What did you or will you do for LO's 1st birthday cake. Not decoration wise but flavor, size wise. DD has never had sweets. And with still no teeth and no sign of them im sure she will do fine with the consistency of the cake but not to sure about just letting her go all out with her own mini. I can just see her piling it in and choking lol. Did you do just a store bought cake mix or make something more baby friendly if there even is something like that out there?

Re: 2+ moms older LO's 1st bday cake

  • I made my family's recipe for chocolate applesauce cake. It's my favorite cake, and DS did fine with it. He had a whole mouthful of teeth though. I just gave him a piece of cake, I didn't do a smash cake or anything with him.

  • I made homemade cupcakes, she really liked it but didn't go all willy nilly on it.
  • I bought him a big, pretty cupcake from a cupcake place by me.  He wanted nothing to do with it though.
  • At age one they should be on "solid, solid foods" so cake shouldn't be an issue. Give her a little piece of whatever cake you would be happy eating the rest of. Wink

  • I made "soda cupcakes" ..

You use one box of Betty crocker cake mix with ONE can of soda of your choice.. THATS IT. no eggs or oil.

I made chocolate cake with root beer and vanilla cake with orange soda... seriously delicious!

  • We went with cupcakes for DD's first birthday.  It was her first ever taste of refined sugar, so we went with a plain white cake and buttercream frosting.  The cake was a store-bought mix, but the frosting was homemade.  I also made a giant cupcake (Wilton has a giant cupcake pan that I used) for a centerpiece.  She really wasn't that into the cake, but tried the frosting.  I didn't want to do chocolate, because she had never tried chocolate before, and she was at high risk of food allergies.

  • for her actual bday (which was a Wednesday), I just bought her a fancy cupcake to have after dinner.   She pretty much liked to mush the frosting.

for her party, we had cake and cupcakes for the guests - she had a small taste of her nana's cupcake.

  • We did a cake on his actual birthday for playgroup and then a party the next day.  Both were 8x10 and box mix one was chocolate with white frosting and one was white cake with chocolate frosting.  I was a little concerned about giving him his own mini-cake because those always seem huge to me so he got a piece of each on each day.

The funny part was that he didn't want to get into it at all.  Our neat little boy didn't want to get dirty at all.  Now that he knows cake he is all over it.

  • We ordered a sheet cake for family members that came to DDs 1st B-day party and got her a "smash cake"  Looking back that was silly because she didn't want any of it.  She had teeth but no taste for very sweet things.  She barely touched the cake so even cute pictures of it didn't really happen.   I think making or buying a cupcake is a great idea.  An applesauce recipe would be a good idea.
  • I made a giant cupcake cake for him with a box mix.  Easy peasy  :)

Awww, look how leeeettle he was!!!  :)

  • For DD1 I just made a regular cake.  I made dirt cake for DS.  It was definitely easier to eat (depending on how fine you make the oreo crumbs).  It's messy though!  I've also seen a sand version that uses nilla wafers instead of oreos.

I haven't decided yet what I'm going to make for DD2.

    DD1 - 12.25.05
    (m/c 1.17.07, m/c 5.15.07)
    DS - 03.15.08
    DD2 - 12.03.09

  • I'm going to get them cupcakes for their 1st birthday. I'll get a cake too (for everyone else) but cupcakes for them!

  • Giant cupcake from a box mix.

He pretty much just picked off one sprinkle at a time and dove into the icing. He had no teeth at the time either.

    aww my wittle baby!!!

  • We ordered from a bakery. The party was bear themed, so the main cake was a huge bear shaped cake that matched the invitations. We got DS a smash cake-just a small round one

  • We went with a large cupcake rather than a smasher.  It had butter cream icing so no fondont (sic).  DD did not seem to have any problems.

  • I made cupcakes.  I decorated them to look like lions--they were super cute.  I used carrot cake, as I really felt like that was a bit healthier and not quite as sugary.  I was afraid that if I gave him full sugar chocolate or something he might end up with the big D for his birthday.
  • we had plain white cake with regular frosting.

I do this with dark chocolate cake mix, a can of coke and add a can of cherry pie filling! It's SOOOOO GOOOOOOD.

Otherwise though for my son's first birthday I just made cupcakes from a cake mix and we gave him a slice of chocolate cake at my boyfriend's grandparents house. He wasn't big on either but there was no problem with physically eating it - just didn't want to get messy.

  • i had a 3 layer cake (homemade) and made the top one banana-carrot cake. I decorated it with fondant which i pulled off.
