EP? about frequency/amount of pumping

I have been EPing for DD since she was 2 weeks old and have always pumped every time she ate until recently.  I stopped pumping at her 6am feeding last week and starting on Sunday night she STTN from 8pm to 5am and then from 5am to 8:30am.  Last night I couldn't sleep (DD has a cold and I'm so worried I can't sleep) and I pumped 11 oz at 3 this morning and then 10oz at 10:40 am.  She usually only eats 23-25 oz a day and I plan on pumping 2 more times.

So, my question is since I have pumped so much already can I get away with only pumping 4 times or should I continue to pump the 6 I have been?  I've heard to pump every time she eats until 3 months so am I screwing myself if I don't?

TIA ladies!

Re: EP? about frequency/amount of pumping

  • I have only been pumping 4 times a day for the past month.  I have toyed with the idea of picking up an extra session everyday, just because I want to pump as long as possible.  I was having no problems with supply, no drop or anything, I'm just paranoid about my supply just not being there one day.

  • If you have a good supply then try it if you find that you supply has dropped then increase your pumping times back to what they were.  I have dropped down to pumping 4-5 times a day and I pump plenty and usually have extra to freeze.  Sometime I will see a slight drop then I will add and extra pumping and pump a little longer to increase supply again.

  • Why not try going down to 5 and see what happens? A LC told me that the most you ever really need to produce in a day is about 35 ounces (and so far that's true - I've never fed DS more than that). So I would make sure you are pumping that much in case your LO has a growth spurt. I am able to pump that much with 4 pumps a day, but everyone is different.
