I took Andrew to the doctor today to recheck his ears after 10 days on
the new medicine (Augmentin). His ears are finally clear (yay), which
we were pretty sure they were since he acted so much better after 2
days. She agreed it sounds like he also had a sinus infection this
time, which is also better.
The other good news is that his weight is doing very well - 23 lb 6
oz, he is experience catch-up growth and making major headway to his
actual age (he's between 5-10%). Maybe this is partly why he can't seem
to eat enough to fill himself up - he's in a growth spurt and isn't
that efficient with eating. (He is following the same growth curve -
hovering around 50% for preemie boys)
Also, because of repeated sinus/ear infections, that won't go away
with reasonable durations of antibiotics, she is referring us to an
ENT. they won't automatically do surgery, but are the experts who will
reviews his file. She said frequently reflux inflames things though,
preventing them from draining properly and fostering infection. She
especially thought he needed to go to an ENT because he's been on
antibiotics almost constantly and we're just now heading into winter.
They may consider allergy testing, although she doesn't believe from
his symptoms that he has an allergy (rare anyways). She also doesn't
think he's immune deficient, but said we could test him if we wanted to
(I'm inclined to trust her judgement).
If you have any ENT recs let me know. She gave me a name but I'd like to see who you all like.
Re: Andrew update - need ENT recs
We saw Dr. David Fang. We saw him on the south side, but I'm fairly sure he has a northside office as well. Here's the website:

He was absolutely wonderful and so was the rest of his staff.
That is who she recommended. And Hamaker's partner, I forget his or her name.
These are the docs I work with all the time. LINK. You can't go wrong with any of them, but Hamaker is my favorite.
EDIT: And I could totally be A's recovery nurse
Thanks! I think since 2 people have chimed in about this practice, and his pedi loves them, we'll go there.
That would be cool!!!!
I forgot to add... should A need surgery, we have a peds short stay unit that is for patients staying less than 24 hours. There are only 6 beds on the unit, and NO infectious/resp kids. Almost all of our ENT kids go there. So you guys would avoid a lot of the germs rolling thru a pediatric hospital during winter months.
oh! I didn't even think about that....thanks!!!
