1st Trimester

Would you keep eating?

I'm nauseated all day. Unless my mouth is busy chewing or swallowing food, I'm very nauseated it gives me a pounding headache.

I have Zofran but I've only taken it once and it works pretty good. But I think I shouldn't take too much drugs if I can help it.

Should I just keep eating food or should I take Zofran? What would you do?

I'm eating all day, oatmeal, cereal, pineapple juice, grapefruits, pastries, Doritos, everything just to keep the nausea away! Food don't even taste good, and this certainly isn't healthy.

I just want to know what you would do in my situation. Would you you just go ahead and take Zofran?

  • What about sugar free gum?

  • As long as you're shoving healthy stuff in your mouth, I'd go with the food option but that's just me.

  • Yes, keep eating. Just try to make it healthy.

Gum, mints, toothpaste, they tend to make me even more nauseous.

That's the thing, it's not always healthy stuff. Doritos and cakes. I'm so tired of eating too. :(

Have you tried non-minty gum? Perhaps it's just the mint flavor?

  • I'd take the zofran if it worked.  I was on intravenous zofran last pregnancy.  I'm pretty sure I had more in one day than you would take all pregnancy by mouth.  It didn't hurt a thing.  Took the oral one all though my first pregnancy, too.  This time around....I'm completely immune to the oral one.

For sure keep eating!  Eating small meals every couple hours all day long was all that helped me in the beginning.  I ate what sounded good or what I could tolerate.  I also wanna say that I've been taking Zofran every single day since about 9 weeks.  I'm still taking it.  Every time I think I don't need it and let it run out, I spend the day in the bathroom throwing up....still.  My doctors have continued to prescribe it to me without hesitation.  Don't worry about having to take it if you need it.  That's what it is there for!  GL!

Huh, thats weird since mint is a natural remedy for nausea.   But then again thats from my non pregnant view point...lol.

  • If it were me, I'd take the Zofran. Actually, I really want to give you my address so you can send it to me!

My doctor asked me to try to get thru a week taking B6 every 4 hours and eating a diet high in protein. I'm still on the floor in the bathroom all day.

I do think the chewing action helps. But, I tried gum and I'd get 3 seconds into it and I wanted to die. One thing that did help for a bit was Starbursts!

M/S is a strange thing and doesn't always make sense. That's the only way I can explain it.

Or I'm just strange. Chewing gum or any type of mint after meals always upsets my stomach.

Doctors and scientists don't fully understand m/s. It's definitely strange!

  • Zofran :) I didn't have any morning sickness at all. But one day I did wake up and was soooo sick, throwing up uncontrollably. Called my doctor and she said to go to the hospital and they gave me zofran. I only needed it for that day but literally 3 minutes after they put it in my IV i was fine.

  • If it makes you feel better, and is safe (and obviously it is...), why not just take the Zofran?
  • I just keep eating.  Hopefully I won't be an elephant by the time this morning sickness wears off!

Wrigley's Spearmint gum helps while I'm working but I usually snack on fruit and crackers while I'm home.

  • This is exactly how I was feeling. It is starting to go away with me so I am glad, but this is what helped me. I drank iced water, the water made me feel better, even though it sounded gross, but muching on the ice helped a lot. Sometimes it just helps to throw up. I mean if you are throwing up all day it's not good. And I hate throwing up but when my stomach hurt and I was just so nauseated and it felt better to justs get it over with. The food may actually make you have more nausea. if you are just eating to eat. Try nibbling very slowly on graham crackers. That also helped me.
  • you should be doing both.  Eat small meals and keep healthy snacks around.  And take the zofran ffs.  It makes you feel better, right?  It's totally safe during pg.  Don't try to power through this, take the meds!
  • I am in the same boat as you. I've tried so many things: eating the small meals all day long, took B6 25mg three times daily for a week, chewed on gum, sucked on hard candy....no relief! I feel so gross. I hope this ends soon! I have Zofran now too ever since my appt on Thurs. I've taken it twice. It does help take the edge off of the nausea. I'm going to try to use it sparingly and continue eating small meals.

  • Hi Turtle! I didn't know you were pregnant. Congrats to you and Mr. Turtle!

I would just keep eating, but stick to healthy things. This is actually what I have been doing. I eat fruit all day long. Especially grapefruit, apples and bananas. Oh and carrots are good too. My mom was actually just making fun of me because I talked to her on skype for like and hour and a half and the entire time I was eating something. I am like you though, I would rather not take medicine if I don't have to, even when I am not pregnant.

I am not saying this like it's a good thing but I have actually lost over 5 lbs since I got pregnant.

  • you sound EXACTLY like me.  i take the zofran just once per day (4mg).  i take it with dinner so i wake up feeling good and i can usually make it through the day if i do that.  but there are a lot of days where i have to constantly eat to make it until dinnertime.  sometimes i cave and take the zofran in the morning (usually if i have something to do that day).  i was a little hesitant to take it too, but i recently read that some women have to take 32mg a day.  so i feel like taking 4mg a day is not bad at all!  if i were you, i would suggest trying to take 4mg once a day!  good luck!

  • p.s.  i was also really sick of eating constantly and my doctor prescribed it without me really asking so i am not too concerned.  also vernors helps me a lot.

Hi Pandi! I was thinking I don't see you on F&B board anymore. Thank you, and congrats to you and Mr Pandi also!

My world has changed since pregnancy. I'm a vegetarian who now craves a lot of my native meat dishes and don't want to eat a lot of vegetables.

My doctor isn't too concerned and my family definitely thinks I should just keep eating since I'm underweight to begin with. But it's awful when your stomach is not used to eating as much food as I am eating now.

I see you're a May mom. I'm due in June. Happy and Healthy 9 months to you :)

  • Thanks for the feedbacks ladies.

I finally did cave and took Zofran just before bedtime, after I hurled what felt and looked like everything I ate yesterday while I was brushing my teeth. Ick.

I hope you all feel better too.
