anyone else get anxious before they travel?

Usually when I'm flying somewhere, it's without DS, so I always attribute it to leaving him. But now he's coming with me, and so is DH, so I'm annoyed that I feel so anxious. We're flying, which I despise, and I can't even have a drink this time on the flight to take the edge off like I usually do.

Ugh. This is so not cool. My mom was like this, and I hated it as a kid. Made going places no fun, and now she barely leaves the house.

Re: anyone else get anxious before they travel?

  • I get anxious every time we go away.  We fly every winter to visit my in-laws.  We have been doing it since ds was 4 months old.  I am a pro at it.  I completely have our routine down, yet I still get anxious.  For me it is because I am a total control freak.  So I get anxious about checking the luggage, getting to the airport on time, the kids on the plane (even though they always do fine) etc.

I rely on my dh.  We have done it so many times that he knows what I need help with to stay calm and he knows when to leave me alone.  I make it clear when I am feeling anxious and need his help.  I actually find that I am a little less nervous when my kids travel with me because they are a distraction.

Good luck and just be open with dh that you need reassurance and help.

  • Thank you for the reply -- it's helpful. The last time I flew with DS, he wanted me to read to him the whole time, so I was definitely distracted. I'm hoping it's the same this time as well.

  • I'm getting anxious about going to Chicago for my sister's basic training graduation. I'm thinking it is because SS and DH aren't coming, but DD and I are both going. DH will most likely have to work and SS may or may not be at his mom's.  I am just freaking out about the idea of leaving them and just taking DD. :(
  • The thought of packing deters me from going places!!!!!!
  • I usually get anxious too. I always have. I just have a nervous stomach. I usually chew gum to keep my mouth from feeling ick and drink either peppermint tea on the way there and then I usually drink Coca-cola to help settle my stomach. I also bring some xanax with me just in case.

When I was pregnant, I took a benedryl a couple of times to help me relax.

  • I would say that Joe and I have had probably 5 major blowouts in our 11 years together....4 of the 5 were before vacations.

I get stressed about getting everything pack, remembering everything, etc.  And Joe is a freaking walking time bomb before we go anywhere.  He gets so anxiety ridden that it's ridiculous.  Add in MY OCD issues and the fact that I'm usually on edge about traveling....and ugh, it's NOT a good mix.

The good news is that we are both usually fine once we get there.  It might take until the next day to regather ourselves but it's really just a couple of days of stress/anxiety and then it's done with.

Have a great trip!  Deep breaths.  And why can't you have a drink?  Because the kid is with you?
