Question for you if you have dogs

Does your LO continually feed the dogs from the highchair?  Jackson started doing this about a month ago.  Short of locking the dogs in another room, I am not sure what to do.

We had them professionally trained and they weren't begging at all and now he is untraining them by feeding them all the time (and it is gross that they are sharing food & unhealthy for the dogs).

Do you have any advice?  I want my son and the dogs to both be able to co-exist and learn to be in the same room together while eating, but Jackson is too young to really understand "don't feed the dogs"...I am hesitant to lock them out because I don't want to send the wrong message to either of them.

Any advice would be great, thanks!

  • At that age yes, but he doesn't now.  He just grew out of it once it wasn't a novel thing to do anymore.  We never made a big deal out of it but redirected him to eating.

  • We are going through this too! We are basically training the dog to lay down at least 2 feet away while DS is eating. She is doing pretty well with it but when he snacks he isn't in his chair and constantly feeds her. It drives me bonkers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • My dobe will not take food from him unless I tell her it's okay (she is trained to not eat without permission)....the little dog is a different story.  She eats the food that Jack throws off the highchair before it even hits the floor.  I usually just put the little dog in a different area during meal time.

Hmm, that's a good point.  I wonder if by me telling him "no" or "mommy doesn't want you to feed the dogs", I am making it worse by giving him attention....

  • We lock them out.  At this age he can't control his urge to feed them so we help him out.  If he does throw any food on the floor we let them come in and eat it when H isn't around to see it.

  • My LO does this.  Honestly, we don't stop him because he only gives her a little and it keeps her entertained and feeling included in things.
  • DS has recently started trying to give our dog all of his food -he tries to "share" and its actually pretty cute- so I have started just shutting our dog in our bedroom during meal time. ?When DS is a bit older and can understand that he's not supposed to feed the dog, then we'll probably not have to shut him in our room anymore. ?
  • We try to make the dog sit a little ways away from him, but if that isn't working then we lock him out. He gets to come in after and clean up the scraps on the floor. DS went through a really bad dog feeding phase, but now he is actually much better about it. He wants to eat the food himself so he doesn't give it up easily anymore!
  • I wish DS feeding the dog was the only problem but DS tries to trade the dog food.  DS also will walk over to the dog pry her mouth open put food in and push her mouth shut.  My poor dogs are putting on weight I hope it stops soon but DS loves to feed his dogs and they love to be feed I should have trained them better before they are used to lots of table scraps.  DS also loves dog food he is always trying to eat it and the dogs will put it in their mouth and bring it to him in the living room it's gross.

  • We have the same problem. If it's a food she loves she usually doesn't do it until she is full. So if we're trying something new we've been letting the dogs out back during meal time.

  • All the fvcking time. I shut them out of the kitchen now. She smiles and says "share?", then gives them food. Grrr.
