Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Just got back from the neurologist :(

It's confirmed -- I have grand mal seizures and my EEG proved it.  I had seizures in my sleep during the EEGl. He wasn't exactly sure what type of seizure disorder I have so I will have a consult with seizure specialist up at St. V's.

Next week, I will have 2 MRIs - one with contrast and one without.  I had tons of blood work done today.  I will also see my neurologist again next week.

He put me on medication and wants me to take low dose aspirin.

I'm terrified of having more scans bc my paternal grandma died of brain cancer and my uncle (mom's brother) died of brain tumors.  They are the only two peopele in my family who have had seizures.

I don't want this.  I don't want to have seizures.  I don't want to have this disorder.  I want to be like I used to be.

I talked to my neuro about the med -- I can get pregnant and safely BF on it so that's lucky.

I know things could be much worse but right in this moment, I'm so upset.

Thanks for reading.

  • did they suspend your driver's license? when my brother had a seizure last year they automatically suspended his drivers license for 6 months.

  • I have a friend who gets seizures. He takes medication and leads a perfectly normal life :) His license was suspended awhile, but after he went a certain period without one, they reinstated it. I'm sure it will turn out fine. Better to get the scans and put your mind at ease rather than wonder, you know?
  • That sounds awful.  I'm sorry.  Sad

Nope.  He just gave me tons of rules (bathing, cooking, driving, etc.)

Plus if I were to drive and have a seizure Jack and I could be seriously injured or God forbid die.  I could also harm other people.

Oregon law says you cannot drive for at least 3 months from your last seizure (which will be 3 months since a couple days ago) only if the meds work obviously.

I'm lucky though because I thought it was 6 months.

  • i am so sorry sweetie, you will be in my thoughts and prayers

  • I am so sorry that you're going through this. I'll be thinking good thoughts for you. I know you're scared but keep in mind that they can do a lot more for people with cancer now with the medicines and treatments available.

  • Sorry to hear that - I'm sure that wasn't easy to hear especially considering your family's history.  If it's any consolation a friend of mine has epilepsy and is able to control her seizures through medicine.  Thankfully she has been seizure free for years.  I hope they are able to find something so you can go back to your normal life.

  • Do you only get seizures in your sleep..or they just happen to catch one while you were sleeping. I am asking because when i was younger (i'm 38) from about 10 - 18years old...I was getting seizures only when i was sleeping...my parents never knew I had this disorder until one evening my aunt heard noises coming from my bedroom and went to see what was going on and caught me in a seizure. Which then my parents took me to a neurologist, put me on medication...and it seemed (what I remember) whenever I stressed out I would release my stress with seizures...I was on medication for a while. My seizures stop when I was about 15 and I had one last one when I was 18 (which was when I had an abortion)....so I am assuming I don't get them now...every so often I check for signs...if my tongue hurts on the side when I wake up I wonder if I was bitting into my tongue because I was having a seizure. Long story short...it just went away.

  • Just a question-my dad had GM seizures, too.  If you had a seizure while you were being studied today, why didn't they take your DL?  Your license has to be revoked for x number of months after your last seizure.  Then your doctor has to verify that you have not had an episode before your license can be reinstated.

Unless you had a tonic-clonic seizure DURING the EEG there is no way an EEG could confirm them. That just isn't how it works.

Can you explain what the difference is between a tonic-clonic seizure and what she said for those of us not well-versed in seizure speak? Smile

No difference - I guess I am just used to hearing the term tonic-clonic over grand mal.

This. Unless you have epilepsy, in which case sometimes the brain waves are always wonky.

Still wouldn't be able to make a diagnosis on the type of seizures.

I did.  My neurologist read the report and told me happened. I had quite a few when I fell asleep during the test for an hour.

It's not possible to have a seizure during an EEG or EKG or whatever it's called?

     Real nice....

  • I hope everything works out and that the tests don't show anything serious, just help clear up what is going on.

    Be careful!

  • I do agree with PP that you can't have tonic/clonic waves on EEG unless you have having a seizure.  You can have abnormal waves on EEG, however.  So either there were grand mal seizures (physically) during the EEG or the physician explained the results to the OP in a confusing manner, or she misunderstood.

To the OP, either way, be happy they are taking things seriously with your famnily  history and ordering the tests and not just assuming its a seizure disorder.  Best wishes.

  • I will say a prayer for you.  Hope everything works out for you.

Yea I know she said that, but a grand mal seizure has lasting side effects for at least a couple of hours......i.e. general confusion, headache, generally not feeling your hottest. She seems like she is 100% fine. ran and posted right away on TB after a tonic-clonic seizure? I don't think so.

I already said I did NOT have a grand mal seizure today.  Apparently people can't read.  This is the last I will say of this.  Believe me, don't believe me,  fine.  I know the truth.
