Has anyone given their baby Nexium (powder packet)?

the pedi has changed Sawyer from Zantac to nexium.  It's 20mg (half the adult dose) and I have to mix the little packet with 1 tbsp of water.

The packet says to let it thicken for 2-3 mintues, but the pharmacist said to give it to him immediately and not let it thicken.  I have it to hip via med dropper this morning, but half of it ended up all over his neck and face.  It took 4 separate fill-ups of the med dropper (5mL or 1 tsp) to get it down him and again, that was only about half of it.

I thought about mixing it in a bottle of pumped milk, but I wonder if it would thicken up and not fit through the hole, or if he would be unable to swallow it?

And, total dumbass question, but if I do put it in milk, do I just dump the packet in there or do I still mix it in the water?  I hate to call the pedi's office again.  I've called more times this week than in the 4 years since we had Blaire.

Re: Has anyone given their baby Nexium (powder packet)?

  • Hi there, my DD has been on the Nexium packets for over 4 months now and it has been a God send!  She's a different baby now that her reflux is under control, I hope you get the same results!

We started out with the dropper like you and had the same results so I bought one of the medicine dispensers that looks like a mini-bottle and that has worked beautifully, it even has measurements on it if you want to be exact about the water.  We don't let it thicken up either but sometimes if she's being especially pokey I need to pinch the end of the nipple to clear it in case it starts to get clogged.  Also, I've also just mixed it up in one her bottles and fed it to her that way as well.  I'm not very exact with the water measurement anymore either and it doesn't seem to make a difference.  On the packet it says that you can add more water add the end if there's any leftover so I don't think it matters much.  Sometimes if she's seeming hungry I'll mix with up to an ounce of water to hold her over the half an hour that she has to wait to let the medicine absorb before she can eat.  Don't mix it with breastmilk or anything of substance, only water.  They have to take it on an empty stomach for it to be effective so if you gave it to him with something other than water that his stomach would have to digest the medicine won't absorb properly.  Also, just a thing I've learned, make sure you soak whatever you dispense the medicine in fairly soon after you give it because after a while it coats the dispenser and is harder to clean.  Good luck!
