I'm thinking LO has some texture issues. He also is not really saying many words (16 months today). What kind of doctor do I go to find out about texture issues? How did you find out? Does your LO have sensory issues too? Someone told me that sensory issues have to do with texture and speech.
Re: texture issues
Our LO has texture issues. He's 17 months and will still only eat mostly purees. He likes a lot of flavors but will only eat them pureed. He's never eaten anything like a piece of fruit or a raisin. He will eat lots of crunchy carby foods like chips, crackers and puffs. He recently started eating quesadilla and that was a huge step in the right direction. He's very, very resistant to trying new things so it's hard to tell if he would like it or not. In addition to his texture issues, he's small. Our Pedi first referred us to a GI doc to try to determine if he was having growth issues or if he was just small. We've seen the GI doc twice. She is somewhat concerned about his size (he just hit 20 lbs and 29 inches) and his refusal to eat certain textures so she referred us to a Feeding Clinic. We don't have an appt until Dec 16th but I spoke with someone on the phone and she said the majority of what they see is kids with texture aversions. She basically told me to feed him whatever he will eat even if it's food that's not super "healthy". She told me not to force the issue and let him have some control. LO doesn't have any speech issues that I can tell. He picks up new words almost daily. He also doesn't seem to have any other sensory issues besides the ones related to his mouth, i.e he hates having his teeth brushed although he will do it himself. He also won't let us stick our fingers in his mouth but I think that's fairly normal with toddlers.
Wait are you in the DC area?
Yes, in Maryland. DS will eat Noodles and Company's Mac and Cheese-its his favorite. He'll eat all fruits, loves rice and fish. He doesn't like bumpy things. He used to like his teeth brushed but now wants to do it on his own. Not sure if it's because he's trying to be independent. We usually end up pureeing his foods so he will eat. He's super picky. Pedi is also concerned with his weight. He's 20 lbs 5 oz and 31 inches. So we are going to a nutritionist at Children's today. She's actually a nutritionist for oncology patients.
I just filled out an application for early intervention so someone will come out to check on him for speech and textural issues. I'm just hoping he's just SUPER picky. We have a weight check next week and we may get a referral to a food clinic--what is a feeding clinic? DS's hematalogist said he may send us to a GI specialist at Children's. Did you go to Children's?
I sent you a PM
