Help...battle on the stairs!

DS LOVES to crawl as fast as he can up the stairs. I let him when Im right behind him and we are going up but now he makes a run for the stairs about 20 times a day and IM EXHAUSTED from chasing him up! He now arches his back and screams when we bring him down as well.... Any suggestions besides a baby gate?

I have a baby gate on the top of the stairs and am desperately searching for one on the bottom that will fit a narrow doorway with uneven sides (molding on the stairs that makes the bottom 32 inches and the top 35 inches..thats the only other thing I can think of!

Re: Help...battle on the stairs!

  • Will this gate work? It attaches to the walls above the molding. We have it and it's sturdy.

eta: I just noticed that they changed the design slightly from the one we have, but it's basically the same.

  • Loading the player...
  • Your LO is a little younger than mine (DS is 14 months), but I have found that telling him, "No-no, we don't play on the stairs" and taking him somewhere else really helped.  Of course, the first hundred times or so, he cried and crawled right back to the stairs.  Eventually, he got the message and now he usually ignores the stairs unless I am going up.

Can you take part of the molding off the bottom of the stairs so the baby gate fits?

    Good luck!

  • DD would go up and down stairs all day if we let her.   I just gate both of us in the playroom if it's not a good time for the stair marathon.  After work, when she's super cranky, I'll spend a good 20 minutes letting her go up and down.  I figure it's good exercise:)  Can you just gate yourselves into a different room/play area?  We just use a tension gate for the play area, but it's a small room.  If you have an open floor plan, it may not work.
  • Get him a toy that he IS allowed to climb on that you can keep/store inside.

Like a little slide or something.
