NBR: Career change....go back to school??

Ok ladies, I need some opinions.

After high school I took a Dental Reception program ( I was 19) but couldnt get a job anywhere ! Its not that I couldnt get interviews, I prob had 30+ !! Its that I looked soooo young ( 1 employer actually came out and said it when I asked why I didnt get the job, he said I looked like his 15 yo daughter. ) My career took a different path after that where I worked in Spa mgmt, but the $ in that is poor.

I would love to be back in Dental where I orignially wanted to work, but its been 10 years since my training. Theres a PT program right near my house and FI and I agreed we could afford the tuition. There is no "upgrade" program ...I would have to re-take the full program again, plus Im sure technology has changed in 10 years.

WDYT...re-take the program? or not worth it , try to find a job with the skills that I have?

  • I would go for it!  If you can afford it AND daycare.  That's my problem, I would love to go back to school, but me going to school, not earning income, and paying for daycare is not even close to possible for me...  unless I win the Lotto, then I guess I wouldn't need the schooling.  =)

  • Hey hun, I think is an excellent idea. I think its especially a good time to act on it since your FI is home to watch K while you take it. Take the oppourtunity. And the added bonus is its fun! Im only taking 1 class a week right now but I love it. Adds some interest to my week and gives me some productivity other than..meals and chores lol. I know I will for sure be taking some more courses cuz its fun!

    Good luck!!

  • Okay, I'll be the other side here. I have a friend who just spent a lot of money to go back to school to further his education to get a job in the medical field. The problem is that no one is hiring. They all want experience. I feel so bad for him because he thought that school was the ticket.

I think that experience somewhere is much more important than schooling these days. Then again, I don't have any college education, and neither does my husband. We've just worked our way up from ground zero and have built our resumes with lots of work experience. We've found that employers are more interested in our job experience than our lack of college education.

Of course, in a dental position, you have to have further education - I'd just check to see if there are actual job openings in your field before forking out the time and money.

    Good luck!
