Mixed Chicks (bi-racial hair products)

Has anyone tried this? I am having the hardest time getting DD's curls to stay nice. Just wondering what you use for super curly hair. Thanks.

Re: Mixed Chicks (bi-racial hair products)

  • I've never even heard of this brand...I should probably look it up.  K has really curly hair like your dd (she's gorgeous by the way), but also has a more dry patch of hair in the back of his head.  I use the J&J no tangles leave-in conditioning spray, comb that through his hair, and then i follow up with the J&J baby oil gel...not regular baby oil.  That seems to hold the curl really well for him for the most part of the day, atleast until he gets going and is playing like crazy and messes it all up.

I am considering moving to something made more for curly hair though since J&J is probably more expensive than what I really need to be spending on hair products for a toddler....what do you currently use?

Edit: I should add that I only use a tiny dot of the gel so that his hair isn't all icky and greasy.  Some friends and family (including me) always feel the need to run their fingers thru his curls, so it's important to me to find a light product...not too greasy.  Using a small dot of the gel seems to work perfectly.  I never have any extra residue on my hands when I feel the need to run my fingers thru his hair.Wink

  • I use mixed chicks on myself  and like the products.  For my daughter I use Carol's Daughter Hair Milk.  I put it in after I wash it and some mornings if it needs a little help I will dampen her hair and put some extra in.  I Looove it.  It gives great moisture to her curls and they look great.

  • I have been thinking about trying it for all 3 of my girls.  After moving back to the US I am finding that what I use to use on their hair is no longer working so I really need to try something else.  I don't really need anything in my youngest daughter's hair but I want to try and have her curls look tame so she can wear it down.  It's crazy how different all of my girls' hair is.

Right now, I am just using generic detangler spray. It works but I want something that will keep her curls nice all day. I am trying this stuff called Hair Rules but it is pricey. I worry about using baby oil gel because DD's hair is more my texture than DH's, just really curly.

I agree, if it's more your texture then the gel wouldn't work for you.  I mainly use it for the dryer hair in the back.  I forgot about the  Carol's Daughter products mentioned by pp.  This may work great for both of us!  GL!

  • He's not bi-racial but LO's hair is pretty curly and can get frizzy. I use Carol's Daughter Hair Milk mixed with a little California Baby conditioner on his hair right after I wash it and then use a small dab of the Carol's Daughter in the morning. It's keeps the curls tame.

  • i haven't tried that brand, but i use Miss Jessie's products on DD.  i love the Baby Buttercreme and the Curly Pudding. i just dampen her hair a little before i apply them (either or, not both products at the same time), then i finger-comb her hair to help the curls bounce back into shape.

  • Mixed Chicks will probably work very good.  I would also recommend:  Bee Mine, Curly Q's and Beautiful Curls.  These brands will be less expensive than the Miss Jessie's and Carol's Daughter.  But I would also recommend that you get sample sizes first, just to try it out.

I swear by Carol's Daughter Hair Milk.  If your LO has very tight curls, this will keep the hair moisturized and in it's natural shape without gels and such.

Macy sells it online.  I've heard mixed chicks products are great but I'd try Carol's Daughter first.  They have a lot more reviews up online.  If it helps any, my hair is a mix of Rachel True and Scary Spice afro kink.  If not taken care of properly - my hair can end up in one big dreadlock.   It could be straightened without chemicals but when I want to show off my curls, I use Carol's Daughter Hair Milk.  Gels and mousses destroy my hair so I steer clear of using any.
