Do you like Paragard or Mirena better?

I want to get one or the other after I have this baby.  I like the idea of no hormones in Paragard for nursing, but don't want a heavier period so may wait a while and then get Mirena so the hormones can help to regulate me.  I have no issues with BC pills, just don't want the hassle of having to remember one every day.  Advice or experiences?

  • I have the paragard and only for the first year did I have longer periods, not heavier.

This is my second year with it in and my periods are now completly normal. Everyone is different though. Hope that helps. :)`

  • I have the Mirena and I am having it taken out at my yearly appointment because I don't like it. When I took a BC pill I took Ortho Tri-Cyclen LO it controlled my acne, mood swings, cramps, etc. Now that I have the Mirena I have acne again, horrible mood swings, cramps, and excessive discharge. I think the hormones in the Mirena are too much for me.
  • I have the Paraguard and love it.  I went with it because it was hormone free.  My periods do seem to be a little heavier for a few days and last slightly longer.  However, I don't know if this is because I recently had a baby so my body isn't fully back to normal yet.  My friend was on the Mirena and her periods have been worse now that she's on it.  Everyone's body reacts differently.

  • I have the Mirena.  I don't love it because I think it makes me feel kinda weird, I do love that my periods are super light and the fact that I don't have to take a pill everyday.  I have a friend who had Paragard put in about 2 months ago and she had heavy periods and was just saying she doesn't like it.

  • I have Mirena, but I will admit, I really had to tough out the first couple of months with it.  I was really bloated, had a non-stop period, and had horrible cramping.  Luckily, it eased up and now I have a very light period every month.  It's great now, but I hated it at first.

  • Ugh, I'm wondering if I should just go back on the pill.  I really don't want an oops baby, and with an IUD I might not know if it slips out of place... At least with the pill I will know if I missed one and can be careful. But we are done having kids... I really can't imagine taking a pill every day for the next 20 or so years!

With an iud, you have to make a follow up visit about a month after it's inserted, to check the strings and make sure it hasn't moved.  I wouldn't worry about having a oops baby on an iud.  I cannot get pregnant again for a few years, and my doctor strongly urged me to consider getting an iud since I didn't want to get my tubes tied.

    HTH!

Exactly.  Plus an IUD has is the highest effective rate for birth control.  Have you thought about the Essure procedure or having your husband get a vasectomy if you're done having kids?  DD's friend had a vasectomy and he said it really wasn't that painful...
