Is my child "overly" hyper?

We had a special event at work today and my boss's 14month old grandaughter came to it.  The presentation was 1.5 hours long and the baby sat on her mom's lap for about half of it and then quietly walked around in between two tables the rest of the time (we were in a huge hall with 20 tables set up).

There is NO. WAY.  Garrison would have behaved that well at such an event.  First of all, she would be squeeling most of the time but she would be running all.over.the.room.  She would need to be the center of attention and go up to everyone.

G is almost 16 months old and is definitely more mobile than this baby is (though she can walk, it's still the frankenstein thing) so that may make *some* difference but....not much.  My mom told me she wanted to take her to church a couple of weeks ago and we were like "um, yeah, good luck with that!"

So....are/were any of your 16 month olds this high energy-- is it normal?  Is there anything I can do to keep her a little more mellow, or do I just have to deal with it-- OR, would that be stifling and there is time to deal with this later??

  • No way Henry would sit still for that long, and he's not walking yet. But he still wants to be on the go all the time. He doesn't sit quietly for any reason whatsoever.

  • ha, my boys sit for a max of like 2 minutes these days. We used to take them out to eat all the time but just can't do it anymore cause they don't want to sit anymore, they just want to go. I think most children their age are the same way.

  • There is no way R would make it through a meeting/presentation for 1.5 hours.  No way.  I can usually get R to somewhat enjoy a short car ride, grocery shopping or to be relatively calm at friend's house by distracting her with food (snack cup), my sunglasses and music (car only).  My kid will not watch tv.  Most of the time I am very busy keeping up and entertaining my very active kid.
  • DS is super active.  He skipped walking and went straight to running.  He never stops all day, he's like the energizer bunny!

  • Whew!!!  This is what I thought-- but I started second guessing after I saw this today-- I was at the table next to them so I couldn't stop watching her, I was in awe.

    OK-- thank you!

  • Some babies are just more mellow than others.  Mine were both not mellow like that at all, DD especially not.  She sounds a lot like G.
  • Your DD is totally normal.

I don't know many 14 month olds that would sit for over 30 minutes.....if anything they are the minority!

DS1 has always been very, very active and DS2 is just as active!

  • My boy would be climbing the tables.  He would never sit still either.  He'd be running around embarrassing me.  HEHE!!  But he's always been like that.  He's not much of a talker, but he's a runner!

  • Eli would have been that age around Christmas last year.  Yeah, not sitting for any length of time.  I remember that when we were all sitting down for dinner, he was under the table barking.  Unfortunately, it doesn't get much better.  We had an insurance meeting this evening and Eli had to come with us.  He was fine for the first 5 minutes because they had candy...then he got his cars out, that was fine.  Until he ended up underneath our insurance person's desk and was driving his cars up his pant legs.

  • Jacob is just a couple of months older, but there is NO WAY he would sit still for that (or any) amount of time a couple of months ago or now.  He's just a very active kid.  If he's not sleeping, he's running.  Talking.  Yelling (happy yells).  Waving.  Climbing.  He's just all over the place.

I'm hoping that my next one is my mellow one!

  • nah - they are all different.

even my twins = totally different... Gibby will hang out easily for things like that --- Gray is ALL OVER and can not be still for very long at all.

  • DD might sit still for part of the time if we fed her constantly! I'm probably a horrible mother, but that's how I get through errands these days. Lots of snacks! And she is a very social little girl, so she'd be "talking" the entire time (she loves to say "hi" and "bye" to people and gets very offended if they don't respond :) ) We took her to my brother's graduation when she was 11 months old and she was so loud (not crying, just babbling/squealing) that we had to take turns taking her out.

She's not walking well yet, but she'd definitely still be all over the place. There is no way she'd sit that long!!

  • We tried going to story time around that age and we only went to 2 because DS was too high energy.  All of the other kids were sitting on their moms laps and DS was running around, trying to open the door, pulling books off shelves, etc.  Some kids are laid back and shy and others just arent.  DS has always been high energy, he doesnt walk anywhere, he runs - and he runs non stop.  As he's getting older, he is settling down a tiny bit but I think he will always be a high energy kid.

My mom says with her kids, these things showed her how her kids would behave when they were older.  I was very independent as a LO, I would play by myself, I was cooperative, etc.  I am the same way now.  My brother was very laid back and he still is.  My sister was very high maintenance and very shy - she is still the same way.  So my hope is that since DS is active and isnt shy around new people, that he will be the same way when he's older.

You may have to discipline differently to appropriately deal with her behavior but overall, an active toddler can be fun!
