PUPP after delivery?

A few days after delivery my lower stomach began itching quite a bit.  Now my lower and some of my upper stomach are itching a lot and I have red itchy marks (kind of looks like my stretch marks are inflamed).  From what I am reading, it sounds like PUPP, but I never had any itchiness when I was pregnant.  Can PUPP start after delivery?  I will call the nurse line tomorrow to ask about it, but I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this.

Re: PUPP after delivery?

  • My PUPP rash started in week 39 in my stretch marks on my abdomen, but spread to my legs, arms, and butt AFTER I got home from the hospital. It got so bad that I had to go to a dermatologist and get put on a steroid. Hopefully yours is not as bad as mine was, because I would not wish that on anyone! Hopefully it's tame. In the meantime, Sarna helped me out with the itching as well as hydrocortizone 1% cream.

    Good luck and feel better!

  • I got it after delivery.  I had no symptoms until the first week after I delivered, it started as itchy red bumps on my stretch marks on my belly, then spread to my legs.  At its worst I had it covering my legs, arms, on one breast and even the palms of my hands and soles of my feet. My OB initially said to take benadryl (I'm BFing) which didnt help.  I ended up on a 5 day course of Prednisone and Zyrtec for 3 weeks.  I found that wictch hazel and aloe helped the most for the itching, it cooled everything.  Hydrocortisone cream, benadryl cream and calamine lotion did nothing for me.  I was waking up at night itching and unable to sleep from the itching.

My symptoms are mostly gone now- the Prednisone was the only thing that helped.  I've heard it can last 6 weeks, and the worst of the symptoms last one week.

  • My itching isn't horrible, I am just starting to wonder if that's what it is now that I have a visible rash.  And I am starting with it on my legs too.  I will def call the doctor's office tomorrow.
  • That was exactly how mine started.  The itching started before the rash showed up.  My OBs office had me try Benadryl first, they told me to take 50mg every 8 hours- which I couldn't do because it would have put me to sleep, so I took 25mg every 8.  When that didn't work and the rash began to cover my body, I saw my PCPI ended up on Prednisone.  Hope yours doesn't get too bad.
  • I ended up on Prednisone as well, and after 2-3 days, the rash was gone, but the itching is still around a bit. I assume my skin is dried out. The doctor now told me to try vasaline jelly to help with that. But yes, call a dr. and try to nip it before it gets too unbearable. Like the PP, I too was up at night unable to sleep from the itching. It is NOT fun. Good luck.
