Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I guess I'll ask this over here too RE: BF (from 9-12)

Hey ladies, I'm hoping maybe some of you can offer some input since your LOs are 1 already.

DD is 10 months old and currently, nurses at 6am/11am/4:30 pm/ 7pm and sometimes once at night around 3:30-4.  On the days I'm at work, I nurse her before I leave, leave one bottle for my dad to give her, then I'm home in time for her 4pm feeding.

I'm just wondering how much longer she'll need that 11am feeding.   As she gets closer to one, will she not want it?

I'm curious because working 2 days a week, and if she keeps that bottle till she's 1, I need to provide 16 bottles.  Is it possible, that around 11 months she may drop it and then I'll only need 8 bottles? or do you think would be okay to replace that with a solid snack?

Any ideas?  Thanks

  • I'm trying to remember what DD did at that age.

Not what you want to hear, but I think DD kept up at least two bottle feedings while I was at work - so the equivalent to your 11 and 4:30 feedings - until she was a year. It wasn't until I started to daytime wean her at a year that she dropped to one and then none.

  • Cedric all of a sudden dropped about 1/2 of his feedings when he turned one.  Shock to me, but he is doing great.  He is slowly weaning himself I guess.  He now nurses in the morning, before naps, and before bedtime.  Sometimes asking for it (by pointing) at other times as well.

  • I am pretty sure I dropped DD down from 4x a day to 2x a day at 12 months, right around her birthday I think.  She ate a lot of solids though and I added in snacks to replace the nursing sessions I was taking away since I took the two before nap time out first, but she did fine with it. You can try it out and see how it goes and have your FIL give her some water and a solids snack at 11, if it doesn't go over well you know for the next day that she still needs that bottle.

  • DS is still eating that much, at similar times (7am, 11:30, 3pm, 7pm, and lately once or twice at night but I think that's just because he's been sick). It really depends on the baby - some seem to drop it naturally, others (like mine) don't.

This. It's kind of funny because he'll come up to me and point at my chest then if I'm close enough he'll actually yank down my top and stick his head down the neck!!! Geeeeez... But yeah, he nurses before his naps, and once over night..usually a total of 3 times a day (including the 3am overnight feeding). Sometimes more if he's not feeling well or something.

  • Around your DD's age, DS was breastfeeding 4-5 times a day.  First thing in the morning, mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and before bed for sure - with a nighttime feed usually in there as well.

By 11 months he had dropped his mid-afternoon feed and shortly after, I dropped his mid-morning feed.  If I wouldn't have pushed the issue, I think he would have kept it up, but he didn't seem to miss it once it was gone.

If you want her to drop one, you may have  to initiate - try replacing it with a snack and see how she does.

  • Thank you so much ladies.  I'm barely getting .5 oz combined at my pumping sessions anymore, so it's hard to keep supplying bottles, and I have just enough of a freezer stash to make it to 11 or 11.5 months with that mid morning bottle.

Again, thanks so much!  See you all here in a few months!  :o)

  • DS kept the 2 day feedings you are talking about until he was 12 month and I replaced each one with a snack about a week apart and had no problems.  I was just talking to my friend who is nervous about having enough supply to make it to 12 months - her dd is 11 months.  I would want to keep try to keep the feedings as close to 12 months as possible.  My friend is planning on giving four ounce bottles instead of 5/6 ounce bottles at the feedings and then have daycare follow up with snack or milk if dd still seems hungry - I thought that was a good plan.

  • I exclusively nursed G until she was about 7 months old.  She would nurse at 7:30, 11:30, 3:30 and again at 7:00.  She STTN.  At eight months we dropped the 7:00pm session.
