Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Mom's of really active toddlers..

Does your child ever tense up randomly? DS is a really really active little tyke, always walking back and forth around our place with his toys chatting away, and loves running around outside etc.  Since before he could walk, if he gets excited or sometimes it seems random he'll suddenly clench his fists usually over his head or out front and "effort" really hard making his face go red and he even shakes! He's not pooping hehe. I don't think it's involentary, because he does it back and forth with us, like a game. My MIL says it's probably because of all the energy he has, gets over-excited. I'm debating asking my dr. about it. I'd be more worried if he seemed to do it unintentionally but he definitely seems to be in control of doing it.

Anyone elses little ones do something like that?  I think he's done it since around 9 months old.

  • DD doesn't do that, but she does get make a face and do a little head shake when she gets super excited about something--like she's so happy she can't hold it in.

  • I would ask your dr. about it, but I wouldn't get too worried.  Our son does something similar and after doing some research, I read that play-doh, sand play, and water play is good for that.  Worth a shot.
  • Hmm, did the research say what it was? I'll mention it next time I see the Dr.  I'm not concerned because as I said it dosen't look like it's something he can't control..not "seizure" looking. Just kinda weird. He LOVES bath time that's for sure. Sand and play-doh... could try that although he still chews/eats everything O_o Haha I know toddlers put stuff in their mouth but seriously it seems excessive with this guy..he literally EATS board books (we don't let him play with those anymore... just chew-friendly ones!)

  • Hm doing a quick search i came across this forum posting: https://community.babycenter.com/post/a1402355/tensed_shaking

EXACTLY what he does and it sounds like a lot of other moms had kids doing the same. Sounds like an excitement/frustration thing which makes sense. Again though I'll mention to my Dr.

  • Yes.  My son does it.  We call it his scarry face and now he does it when we ask him too.  He usually laughs after he does it so I don't think he's mad, just a funny face he likes to do.

  • DS just started doing this.  It freaked me out the first time, I thought he was choking or something.  He just does it to be funny because he laughs after he does it everytime.
