Indiana Babies

pink tinge debacle continues.

So, G has had a pink tinge around his #2 in his diapers sporadically for two weeks now. It would show up one day, then not again for two days, three days, maybe there'd be some two days in a row, etc. I've been talking to the doc who kept asking the same questions to which I had the same answers. He's acting fine, no fever, no signs of discomfort, etc. I finally got fed up and went to the walk-in clinic at our office this morning to see a different doc. Our usual doc is on maternity leave and won't be back till next week.

Anyhow, the doctor did a full physical exam on G, listened to his bowel sounds, pressed around on his tummy, checked for fissures, etc. and couldn't find anything abnormal. He's gaining weight great - up to 16 lbs 14 oz - and she said he's "the picture of health" so she isn't too terribly concerned. She is having us do a hemoccult to test his stool for blood. We are to collect from a non-pink-tinge poo and a pink-tinge poo.

I'm starting to wonder if he has a food allergy. I got to thinking about it and I can't get out of my head that this may have started when I started eating more eggs - sometimes several a day - to up my protien intake. The only sign that anything is wrong is the pink tinge, though so I just don't know what to think. I'm going to bring it up to the doc when we take the samples back in and see what she thinks - it didn't occur to me until I was eating my eggs this morning. I'm going to talk to her about an elimination diet to see if that would help. I'm just sick of seeing pink tinge and worrying!!! Bah.

Re: pink tinge debacle continues.

  • Evie had the same problem, only hers was accompanied by screaming at the breast as well.  My body did some weird stuff to dairy and I had to cut it out completely.  She did fine with dairy on her own when she started solids (ie yogurt etc)  Something by body did to the dairy in the breastmilk her body just couldn't handle.

Glad you took him in....way to follow your mama instincts!!!

  • Luke is allergic to milk and used to be allergic to eggs.  He would get terrible diaper rash and it never occured to me that was what it was from until we started solids.  I would eliminate for a few days.  I kept a journal of what I was eating and that seemed to help when I visited the dr.  They eventually gave him a lab test and found out.

As hard as the lab test is, I would get it done earlier than when they remember a little more.  Luke has to get one to see if he outgrows it and at his 2 year check up the bloodwork was so sad.  I felt awful and it took three nurses to get the blood drawn.

  • I'm really glad you took him in to get it checked out.  I hope it's nothing, but even if it is something you're eating, maybe you can do the elimination diet and see if that helps him.  I'll be thinking of you guys!

PS - He's such a little chunk and absolutely adorable!  I love the pumpkin picture and may have to steal the idea!

  • Poor guy - I hope he is ok!
