How would you feel if your next pregnancy was twins as well?
I just met a mom with 2-year-old twins (boy + girl) who is 23w pregnant...with twins (boys). She was funny - she said, "Before you ask, no, we have never had any fertility treatments and no, twins do not run in our family".
The odds of that must be crazy small, right? But can you even imagine? I mean, I can't imagine one set of twins let alone two.
Re: Moms of twins...
I'd never heard that, but I guess it makes sense! Crazy town.
On the bright side: She's already been through it once and has no idea what she's "missing" having just one right?!
Crazy!
My best friends in high school were identical twins. They had a sister 1 year older than them and ...get this... another set of identical twin sisters 2 years younger than them. So that's right, 5 girls, all in high school at the same time. 2 sets of identical twins. NUTS.
Their mom told me that the last pregnancy was unplanned and when she found out it was twins, they booked her husband's vasectomy the same day.
There is no chance of a future pregnancy here. We agreed on 4 kids, so we're done. I could be talked into another pretty easily, but DH has this insane fear that it would be triplets next time!
Growing up, the girls that babysat my brother and I are fraternal twins, and their older brothers were identical - that is VERY rare (one identical, one fraternal).
Two sets of identical or two sets of fraternal is a bit more common (I've heard). With fraternal the mom is predisposed to releasing multiple eggs. With identical, I've heard they are investigating a possible genetic link in the male's sperm to cause the eggs to split. One of my HS friends has two sets of identical twin girls, and they are only about 14 mos apart, I think - now that's CRAZY!
The odds are HIGH according to my OB when you have fraternal twins! My friend from HS has two sets of multiples! She gets asked all the time if she had fertility treatments. When my OB told us that chances for having twins again are high, DH freaked! He also said once you turn 30 it quadruples the chances. So yea, DH thinks I can only have twins. I keep telling him all the "success" stories of having a singleton after a twin pregnancy. He says I can never do things simple, so he does not believe it. :-)
Growing up, we lived down the street from 2 sets of identical twins, born 1 year apart. Two boys, then two girls. CAN.YOU.IMAGINE?
It truly took a village to raise those children. We all helped out at one time or another!!!
The good news, they are all the best of friends now, and their kids are also the best of friends (and all close in age, so it's one gigantic happy family). They survived, but wow. My hats off to them!
Oh, and get this...the mom went back to college when they were maybe 10 and 11? She was indeed super-woman!
You do have an increased chance of having another set of fraternal twins if you already have fraternal twins, or if they run in your family. There's some genetic link that makes you more likely to release multiple eggs.
Identical twins are usually believed more of a random happening, but some people have hypothesized that there is in fact a genetic link. I'm not sure if any studies have been completed. These are all things I learned in some development courses in college.
I watched something on TLC once about a woman who had three sets of fraternal twins and a singleton. No fertility treatments involved. Crazy!
