Babies: 0 - 3 Months

what is normal for 12.5 weeks ie- sleeping?

My DS sleeps from 9:30 or so until 4 AM, then eats, back down by 4:20, sleeps until 6:30, then eats, then sleeps until anytime between 7:30 and 8:45.

If he wakes before 8, then he takes a 30-1.5 hour nap around 9.   if he wakes at 8:45, he does not nap until around 11.

He will usually take a 1 hour nap between 10 and 1 (depends on day).  then another 30-1 hr nap between 2 and 4.     then he is up for a few hours and then sleeps for 1-3 hours between 5 and 7.   then is usually up from 7:30 until 9:30.

I have tried to put him on more of a schedule, but he will not sleep during the right times. He just cooes and then cries.    (ie- sleep from 7 until 7, then nap from 9-10, then nap from 1-2:30, then nap from 4-5, which is what my MIL says he should be doing).

he is not a heavy child... he was 24 inches long and 10 pounds 9 ounces at 2 months, now, I think he is somewhere around 12 pounds and a few ounces and about 25.25 inches.   He can still fit into some 0-3 month (pretty short, but he is a thin baby).    I had heard that until they are over 12 pounds and 4 months it is hard to be on a schedule, but my MIL tells me he is behind and his sleeping is abnormal.

Thoughts?

  • Every baby is different. My DS is 12.5lbs 24 inches long and a little over 2 months now. He sleeps from 11pm - 5 eats between 4 and 6 oz and then sleeps til either 6 or 8 depending on how much he decides to eat. I still go with the flow of my son. I give him a bath at 9:30 every night but other than that, that is as far as a schedule for him goes. I had heard that they can't develop bad habits or real schedule until they are between 3 and 4 months old. I had also heard (from other mothers and my pedi) that once a child reaches between 12 and 13 lbs they have enough weight to them to sleep through the night. Your LO is just fine.

  • Every baby is different.  9:30 to 4 at 12 weeks is a very long stretch, so be thankful.  Just follow his cues.
  • You pattern sounds very much like my DD's sleeping pattern.  She is also 12.5 weeks.  She sleeps from 8/9 p.m. until 2/3 a.m., then back down again until 6-ish, I feed her and she'll usually sleep for another hour or so until 7:30.  She cat naps (30 - 60 minutes) a couple of times in the morning.  Then she'll usually go down for a long nap (2 - 3 hours) around 2 p.m.  She will take another cat nap around dinner time.    I was worried that she was sleeping too much, but if she wants to sleep, I'm going to let her!!

I posted about this last week and (here's the link - https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/43723613.aspx) and the last reply was really helpful.  That person listed the amount of time, by age, that most babies are awake before they need to sleep again.  Do what seems right for you and your LO!!

  • My LO is about the same age.  She goes to bed at 7pm and recently sleeps until 1:30-2am and then until around 5:30am and wakes up at 7/7:30am.

Her day time sleep is not very consistent - once she begins yawning I put her down and about 75% of the time she will actually go to sleep.  But the time when she starts yawning and I put her down vary by day.  She no longer sleeps longer than 1 hr. at a stretch.  She is just over 13 lbs.

Although I'd love some more consistency during the day, like PP I've heard that it will work itself out in the coming months.  And I'm just greatful to have a good night sleeper, and going to be at 7 rocks - I love a few hours to get stuff done before I go to bed.
