45 minute naps...UGH...

So...I've heard about this 45 minute intruder on here a lot, but never gave it much thought.

However, in the past week and half or so, DS has not taken a nap longer than an hour, which is really frustrating...

He's 8 weeks old today, if that makes a difference.

Can someone explain the 45 minute intruder again and if this is what I'm dealing with, does it correct itself on it's own, or do I have to do something?

FWIW...he's NOT a terrible, terrible sleeper at night; not STTN, but a pretty standard sleeper for a baby his age (4.5-6 hour stretch right off the bat, then up every 2.5-3 hours after that)

Thanks!

  • Its so irritating isn't it! Lucas doesn't even make it 45 minutes, more like 30 or 35. Just give him his paci (if he uses one) and rock him back to sleep. Thats what I do, and he'll usually sleep another half hour to an hour on his own. But! He did just sleep for 50 minutes on his own, AND on his back. Major feat for us!

  • DS#1 used to do the same thing around that age.  You could set a clock to his naps...45 minutes on the dot.  I read about a lot of things to try (white noise, going in before he wakes up all the way to try to soothe him back to sleep, etc.).  Frankly, none of it worked for him.  I just tried to be consistent with his naps and get him down before he got too tired and eventually they became longer.  I'm hoping this doesn't happen/dreading this phase with DS#2!

  • Its been that way in my house for a few weeks now.  Its frustrating because I can only do one thing during naps (shower, or eat lunch, or laundry) where I used to be able to get multiple things done.

We just put some room darkening curtains in his room, and have started putting him down for naps in his room.  Today, he's taken two 1 hour naps in there, which is great.  I'm hoping he starts sleeping for longer periods now.

  • I'm right there with you DD never naps for more then 30 to 45 minutes at a time.  This has always been the case and I don't know anything different. I can't wait until she naps longer.
