A big FU to my OB office's technology (GD related)

I took my 3 hr glucose test on 9/23, never heard a thing back and since the office policy is "no news is good news", assumed I passed. They called me the next day after I failed the 1 hr.

Well, I had my regular OB appt this morning and first thing out of my OB's mouth is "how are your sugars?" and I just sat there with a blank stare. Apparently, I DID fail the 3 hr, though luckily only by a teeny smidgen on 2 of the readings (like 1 point over) and about 8 points after the 1st hour draw. I also have had no other indicators (not overweight, haven't gained much weight, baby has consistently measured right on schedule, no sugars in my urine) so she was a bit shocked that I failed, but I guess the tests don't lie.

Even better was that their electronic lab tracking system f-ed up, so they could tell that one of the OB's had seen my results, then apparently forwarded them on to someone else in the office to handle (contacting me, contacting the hospital about getting me in to a class) and somewhere in the middle the ball was dropped. So here I've been sitting for almost 4 weeks with GD going unchecked! Luckily I can google with the best of them and talk to some friends who have diabetes to figure out what to do for diet modification in the mean time until I can get in the hopsital class, but sheesh.

  • I gotta say it...ignorance is bliss (especially since you are really borderline). If I were you, I'd be super thrilled that I had 4 more worry free weeks.  I'd be saying something different if your numbers were terrible, but since they weren't...I'm sure you're going to do great and you probably have been doing great for the last 4 weeks.  GL!

  • That sucks!  But like PP said, at least you had 4 blissfull weeks of ignorance.  I know when I did the one hour, I was so worried I would fail, I relished all the sweets I had until I got my results, haha.

  • Major flaw on there part but if your numbers are not to off then I wouldn't stress too much besides the lack of communication on their part. Follow the diet plan and get good exercise. I too have GD, I am not overweight, baby has been measuring right and I have no history in my family of diabetes, gotta LOVE hormones. But if you follow the nutrition guidelines and get plenty of exercies you and baby should be good. It takes a day or two getting used to pricking your finger 4X a day but dont worry your almost there! You honestly dont miss out on all of the weird/fun cravings, you learn to manipulate what you eat to still enjoy foods you crave. Good luck!
