Swaddling...was it a fluke?

Ok...so historically, DS HATED swaddling! He is literally moving ALL.THE.TIME. We stopped swaddling him when he was 2 weeks old (probably shot ourselves in the foot) when he would break out of it.

However, when I asked for tips and hints from moms whose babes sleep well, everyone said SWADDLE! While I was going through a tub of baby stuff yesterday, I stumbled across a swaddleme type blanket I got at my shower. I figured why not give it a shot?

So...last night, we started our bedtime routine, lotion, diaper, sleeper, then DH wrapped him in the swaddle. Before DS could really figure out what was happening, I distracted him with the bottle...things went well!

Lo and Behold...DS slept from 8:45-3am!! WHOOOO!!! Then was up again (oddly) at 5...but then slept right through until after 8am!!

Don't know if it was a fluke or if it was the swaddle that did it...but he'll be swaddled tonight for sure!

Re: Swaddling...was it a fluke?

  • My DS was swaddled in the hospital, and then as soon as we got home, started breaking his arms out of the swaddle as soon as we'd put him in it! We stopped swaddling his arms, and just wrapped the blanket around under his arms instead.

When he started having a hard time falling asleep, the pedi said to try swaddling. That night (and every night since), we swaddle him with his arms tucked in and he calms down right away! He still breaks his arms free during sleep, but the swaddling really seems to help calm him down and help him sleep better and longer. Good luck tonight - hopefully he sleeps that well again!

  • Yeah, babies hate being swaddled, but it works.  I will swaddle until I can't find a sack large enough.

  • Our boy would break out of his swaddle too, then one night I started doing it again and he has been sleeping for at least 5-6 hrs straight wakes up, eats and goes right back to sleep. we also incorporated white noise.
  • DD is only 2 weeks old but in the hospital they told us to swaddle her and so did our pedi. They said she doesn't know to sit still, therefore she will not get the rest a nb needs, so swaddling helps with that bigtime. She does get fussy with it sometimes, but she also will sleep 4 hours straight at night, which is nice :)

  • Yup, my son sleeps better swaddled. If he is not swaddled his startle reflex will wake him up. We swaddled my first until she was 5 month old, she was colic though and the swaddles really helped that.

  • I've got a 2 weeker, too and he loves his Summer Infant Swaddle in cotton. We use it only at night as part of the bedtime routine. During the day he's wrapped in a blanket and gets to have his arms out (like he likes). He'll get fussy sometimes at night but once we wrap him tight with his arms down he usually settles pretty quick and we'll get about 4 hrs of sleep, too. We LOVE the swaddle!
