For you former GD mommies...making an induction decision...

Was your GD diet or insulin controlled?  When did you deliver and how big was your baby?  My doc diagnosed me after a high 1hr glucose and I have been testing ever since, however numbers have been good.  High only once in awhile, so I guess I'm considered "diet-controlled" GD, although I feel as if I may have been misdiagnosed.

Anyway, doc has not done any recent growth u/s b/c of numbers being good.  At 18wks LO was in 75%.  B/c of the GD doc still recommends that we do an induction next Fri (@ 40w 1d) if I don't go into labor by then.  She did go ahead and schedule it for us, but said we can ask to push it further back if we'd like... I believe I am a fairly good induction candidate as I have been 80%+ effaced for several weeks and am currently at 2-3cm.  Still, I know letting it happen naturally is better for me and LO, also that inductions often result in emergency c-sections......a hard decision to make!!

  • Have they done another growth ultrasound to check on LO weight?

I had GD and was just diet controlled... i think i had a very mild case.

I ended up being induced at 38 weeks b/c lo was actually measuring small 5lbs 3 oz. I had a successful really quick induction and was only 2 cm and 80% going into it. I had cervadil for 12 hrs then was only on pitocin for 2 hrs before LO arrived.

  • I was diagnosed with GD at 36 weeks.  I had the one hr test done twice earlier in the pregnancy and just barely passed.  My sugars were high but not that bad.  My doc does not allow GD patients to go past their due date.  I had an ultrasound 38 weeks 6 days and Jack was measuring 9.5lbs.  My dr decided to induce the following day at 39 weeks.  Knowing he was already big the longer we waited the bigger he would get which increases the risk of having a c-section due to the baby being too big to fit through the birth canal.  DS1 was 8lbs and I had an easy delivery (also induced) so she allowed me to give it a try but I was told the risks such as the shoulders getting stuck.  She said she would not allow me to labor too long (if he wasn't dropping then he probably can't fit) also would not be able to push too long.  I went in at 4cm and 80%.  Induction went quickly and easily.  Start to finish 5 hrs (keep in mind this is my 2nd) only 2 pushes and he was out with no complications.  Personally I really wanted to avoid a c-section and even if my dr allowed me to wait longer I knew he would only get bigger which increased the risk of a section.  Plus being close enough to my due date he was fully developed and my body was already preparing itself.  Since ur body is already making some progress you have a higher chance of a successful induction.  Ask ur dr for a growth scan that will give u a better understanding of how big ur baby is.  Keep in mind they can be plus or minus a lb.  Jack was estimated at 9.5lbs and weighed in at 9lbs 4oz so not too far off.  Good Luck!
  • I'll give you my story.  I was dx with GD and was diet controlled.  My MW wouldn't let me go past 41 weeks, though, due to the higher probability of placenta breakdown with GD.  I went in for NSTs once a week from 36 weeks on.

I was induced at 41 weeks.  My MW knew I wanted as natural a birth as possible.  She did two rounds of cervadil 6 hours apart and that got me into active labor.  I delivered with no pain meds 13 hours later.  My LO was 8lbs8oz and 21.75 inches.  So, most of his weight was in his length, not chub.  Oh...and I was 2.5 cm and 70% effaced at the start of the induction.

I would say talk to your doctor and see what options you really have.  Would he/she be into doing more rounds of cervadil rather than start the pitocin after one round?

  • insulin controlled from month 5 on.

    I delivered at 40 weeks, 2 days

baby was 7 lbs 3 oz

I was inducted drug free. If your nervous about c-section this is a good way to go.  The doc will break your water and forgo pitocin as long as you progress- it worked for me!

I don't know your whole situation so I won't give my opinion, instead I'll say this- "You are already a mom and you know what is best for your child already, trust your gut-- wherever it leads you is the right answer for you and baby!"

  • I had GD w/ both.  With DS1 I was on insulin and my water broke at home at 33 weeks.  With DS2 I was diet-controlled and I pushed for an induction at 39w5d b/c I was concerned he was getting too big and I didn't want a section (DS1 had to be vacuum extracted at only 5.1 lbs).  OB said it was okay to go past 41 weeks so I consulted w/ another OB in the practice who said induction was fine.  I was admitted on a Friday night w/ nothing happening.  Low and behold my water decided to break on it's own around 4AM (not a result of the cervadil).  He was born 8 lbs 8 oz (bigger than the growth scan reflected) and is now MASSIVE (14lbs at just 6 weeks) so I don't regret my decision!  GL in whatever you decide : )

  • I had diet controlled GD and was induced at 41 weeks 5 days.  I was 80% effaced and 2cm dilated and my induction went really smooth, only 1 round of cervadil. DD was born 21 hours later, 6lb 12 oz.  If I were you I'd ask for a growth US. good luck, i was nervous about being induced but it all worked out!
