Re: store brand formula

  • Store brand formula is required to meet the exact same standards as name brand versions.

  • I'm a store brand whore but DH wouldn't have it with formula. (he doesn't believe it's "the same" so he spends the extra cash on name brand.)

Just check the ingredients, they're basically the same. There are laws and stuff that regulate formula to ensure they meet nutrition standards. If it saves a buck, go for it!

  • Store brand formula is required to pass the same tests from the FDA.  We used BJs brand formula with DS and are using it now with DD and have had no problems whatsoever.  I can't understand the thinking that paying more for name brand formula is going to do something different or better for your kid.  I say switch and enjoy the savings.
  • The regular Up and Up (which is enfamil lipil) is $12 and the Up and Up gentle (enfamil gentlease) is $15 for the regular containers.  I'm kind of anti-store brand for formula, but I decided to try the regular Up and Up kind when it went on sale. L has had nothing but stomach problems.  Lots of gas, spit up and fussiness...  I think if I try it again, I'll definitely go with the Up and Up Gentle!

    This.

DD actually seems to do better on the Up & Up Brand!  =)

I use store brand everything, if possible.  But I'm anal-retentive about how money is spent.

  • I had the same money concerns because with 2 mouths to feed we go through a can of formula every 3 days!  Good Start was getting VERY expensive.  All of the store brand formulas say "Just like Enfamil" or "Just like Similac" none say "Just like Good Start"... so I called my pediatrician.  She said that the only real difference between the formulas was the taste. (The FDA requires that ALL infant formulas have the same nutrient density.) If your LO is tolerating their current formula just fine, it's ok to switch to store brand.  If they don't like the taste, try another one.  She also said, no need to gradually switch (like mix half and half)... just jump right into the new one.  I started buying Sam's Club brand (just like Enfamil Lipil) and it's $19 for 48 ounces!!!  A MAJOR savings!

One consideration... not all store brand formulas have DHA added, and it is an important component for brain and eye development.  Just make sure you read the package carefully and make sure that it's included.  Most do have it, but not all.

  • I'm with you on cost..and trying to save...unfortunately we've tried a few store brands and even Good Start when I had a great coupon deal.

Our baby doesn't seem to tolerate anything except #1 Similac #2 Enfamil.

Good Start gave him BLUE POOP! (and I tossed the can after 4 days--it's more expensive than the other brands anyway) And the store brand that said "just like ---" made him spit up everytime he ate.

So...sadly, I think we're stuck paying the extra $ for name brand...which is odd since I like store brand/generic stuff just fine.

  • I was told by a friend who is an employee at target that UP&UP is the same as Enfamil. All formulas are required to meet the same nutritional standards. Just because your paying $10 more doesn't mean your getting something better. I use store brand EVERYTHING.

  • After the Similac recall and getting tired of ready to feed formula, we gave the Kirkland (Costco) brand a try.  So far so good.  It has a side by side comparison with the Similac Advance and Enfamil and all of them are basically the same.

Like PP said, formula is very regulated so we felt we wouldn't be doing DS any harm trying a store brand.  He likes the Kirkland so far so I don't think we will switch.

Just as a FYI - I usually don't mind store brand stuff, but the Up and Up Gentle has a really wierd smell/consistency to me that the Enfamil brand didn't.  DD was spitting up alot on the Up and Up version so we just switched back.
