Babies: 0 - 3 Months

am i the only one?

whos LC/RN from the hospital  told them not to let LO sleep through the night??

I am EB and my LC said to feed LO every 2 hours, I have strectched it to 2 1/2 -3 but I am seeing almost everyone saying their LO sleeps through the night.

Trust me I have probebly had maybe 12 hours of sleep since LOs birth on 9/27 and would love to have LO sleep through the night I am just surprised there are so many who do it.

Is there an age you can stop timed feedings?

  • We had to wake DD because of her jaundice. Once the pedi cleared her of that and she was well over her birth weight, they said we could let her go at least 4 hours, which is about what she'd do at that age. She didn't even fleetingly STTN until 2 months and it's still not a regular thing.

This is when we were told to stop waking LO to feed.

  • We had to do timed feedings because of Jaundice. At first it was 2 hours, then three...now we can go up to 5 hours.  LO does not seem to want to sleep 5 hours in a row though....

We wake LO during the night. He was in the NICU for hypoglycemia, and needed to eat every 3 hours. Now that we are home we are allowed to let him go 4 hours between feedings. He tends to like to eat every 2.5-3 hours during the day but we have to wake him for every night feeding, so I'm planning to call the doctor tomorrow and ask if we can stretch it to 5 hours at night now. I'm hoping by his 1 month check up we'll be able to stop waking him up at night altogether.
  • This is my 3rd baby EBF and I've found that it's just easier not to time feedings at all- if she looks hungry I feed her- usually it works out to every 2 1/2-3 hours but she also likes to cluster feed at certain times too.  I think STTN is over rated- but I also don't wake them up to feed them at certain times either.  None of my kids STTN until they were weaned- only up one time after a certain point though.  have you checked out La Leche Leagues website?  I am always looking at their FAQ section, it's so helpful. www.llli.org

  • In the hospital they want you to feed them frequently.  This is to be sure that you & LO learn to latch & suck properly so they maximize their intake.  Once LO is gaining weight, there is no reason to wake them.  DD was up every 2-3hrs while we were in the hospital anyway, so we never had to wake her.  The rule of thumb seems to be once they are back up to their birthweight (usually by 2 weeks) then you can stop waking.

Also keep in mind, FF babies will STTN a lot earlier than EBF babies.  This is because the nutritional composition of formula differs from BF, and it is also absorbed/digested differently than BF.

  • My doctor told me when the boys were 2 weeks old, that there should be no reason why we couldnt get a good 4 or 5 hour stretch at night.. she gave us tips on how we could do that and it worked!

They were considered to be STTN at 2 1/2 weeks.. go to bed around 11 sleep til 5 then wake up again around 830-9.. its pretty amazing.

  • OP, I'm right with you! We're EBF and I was told by the LC to wake him every 2 1/2 - 3 hrs during the day and 3 1/2 at night. I always have to wake him up to eat but he's always hungry and eats well. We have our 2 week pedi appt. this week so I can't wait to check his weight and ask about going longer at night. 4 or 5 hrs sounds amazing compared to the 2 1/2 to 3 that I'm currently getting by the time he's fed, changed, and back asleep!
