Hi Ladies,
For all of you that were induced, I have a question. Did your Dr. use or want to use Cytotec to induce your labor? If my little guy doesn't come out by next Sunday I am going to be induced and my Dr. is recommending using Cytotec. After reading about it, I'm a bit leary! Just looking for any personal experiences with it. Thanks.
Re: Lurking from 3T...question for you?
I was induced with it, although if I had a chance to read about it first I don't think I would have wanted to use it! It sounds awful!
I had a pretty successful induction though. I was 41w5d when induced, had cytotec placed around 730am and only used 1 dose (I was told I may need more after 4 hours). My body progressed enough after that dose to start on pitocin and I was ready to push around midnight. I delivered at 150am.
Contractions did get painful within a few hours of getting it, and I ended up getting an epidural although I originally did not want one.
Good luck!
ETA: At 6am that morning I was 20% effaced and only a fingertip dilated and the cytotec got me to 4cm and 80% effaced. After that I was started on pitocin and my water was broken.
I was induced with pitocin. Doesn't help you much...sorry.
My induction was pretty successful, IMO. I definitely needed the epi halfway through the day after my contractions were quite strong and I was about halfway dilated. The rest of the day flew by!!
My doctor tried Cervidil first, and it didn't do anything for me at all. Then he started me on pitocin. The pitocin eventually began to work--after several dose increases. I went on to deliver vaginally.
After birth, my doctor gave me Cytotec to help with the delivery of the placenta. That's when the real pain and vomiting started. I highly recommend avoiding this drug if you can. Pitocin is no joyride, as I vomited with it too, but I'd take it over Cytotec any day, simply because of the intensity of the pain it caused me.
I went into the hospital at 8:00pm (1cm dilated) and they placed one dose of the cytotec at 9:30pm. By 11pm I was 4 cm and got the epidural. At 6am I was fully dilated and just had to wait for the doctor to get there and break my water. I tried pushing at 7:30, but the epidural was too strong so they shut off the epidural and gave me pitocin so that I could feel my contractions at 8. I started pushing again at 9 and she was born at 9:27am. They thought they were going to have to give me at least two doses of the cytotec and give me the pitocin to actually "induce" me, but the cytotec pushed me into full labor. The only reason I needed the pitocin was because the monitor wouldn't pick up my contractions and neither the nurse or I could feel them. I'm so glad I went ahead and did the cytotec.
Btw, I was induced on my due date.
After reading about it, I was totally opposed to cytotec. We went with cervadil to start and that pushed me into full labor, so I didn't even need pit.
Personally, I'd ask to start with cervadil firs. It just seems like a slower way to try to get your body to work on its own, but that really is just my opinion.
