EPers

So DS is being feed breastmilk through bottles. Dr Brown to be exact. We have been burping him multiple times a feeding and some of those burp seem to be spit up. And even after he finishes eating, he is burp and then a few minutes later, he might spit up. Any suggestions to help eliminate this or reduce this.
DS has acid relux and milk protein allergy, and had torticollis, used to EP, now we FF . April siggy 3-6 month

Re: EPers

  • Is it a slow flow nipple? Are you feeding your DS upright? those helped us when we bottle feed.

  • I have found that with my DD if I burp her too often it makes things worse.  I only burp her halfway through, or sometimes not until she is completely done.  She lets out her big trucker burps then and it seems to cut down on the little spitty burps.  I've worked in an infant room and found this to work with other babies too since burping them often can sometimes jiggle them just enough to make them spitty.  It depends on the baby, but it might be something to try out.  Obviously watch for cues that LO might need to burp in the middle also.  Try to keep him upright for about an hour after feeding (bouncer chair, bumbo).  Those were the things that we tried to do with the spitters at daycare.  Good Luck!

DS also gets breastmilk in a Dr. Browns bottle. He almost never even burps, let alone spits up. I think it's because we do a side lying hold while feeing him. While lying on their backs, babies suck from the nipple and the milk pools in the back of their throat before they swallow it. If they suck too hard, you can hear them gulp while they are eating. By doing a side lying hold, the milk pools in their cheek, so they can swallow it at a rate they are comfortable with.

  • What is this mysterious side lying hold you speak of?

DS is just a bit on his side while eating, it's something they showed us while he was in NICU. I usually have him on my lap facing slightly outward and sitting upward slightly, supporting his head/neck/shoulder area with my left hand and having the bottle in my right. Not sure if I'm describing it well, so I googled and found a video that describes it pretty well: https://wn.com/side_lying_bottle_feeding_of_the_premature_infant
