reflux question

Hello-

My DS was born at 27 weeks and is now 36 weeks and is starting to get bigger feedings.  He has been in a Danny sling for quite some time for reflux.  I don't think he has it terribly bad but with his feedings he does do a lot of grunting or similar noises afterwards- he also holds his breath and just looks upset.  I can only imagine it is from the reflux.  He doesn't usually spit up just this grunting and holding his breath and turning all red in the face.  It also makes him desat quite a bit.  Yesterday he choked on his reflux for the second time now and stopped breathing and needed vigerous stimulation and almost needed resuscitation from it.  I am just wondering if there is anything else they can do about it and how bad it would need to be for that to be justified.

Thanks!

Re: reflux question

  • If it's interfering with his breathing, I'd definitely look into meds. Though I think the meds don't actually make less reflux, just make it hurt less, so maybe that wouldn't work in your case...that's all I got, sorry!

  • do they thicken the formula? that really helped mia.
  • ditto pp - Andrew needed thickened feeds and reflux meds.  And unfortunately, his reflux got way worse after we left the hospital and he got older :(
  • Like PP mentioned DD's reflux got much worse after coming home. She was put on Zantac and that seemed to help her with the pain but we also had some apnea from the reflux (I actually called 911 one morning over it - very scary stuff). But our pedi switched us to the Similac Sensitive RS which has the rice starch in it (They changed the name, now it's Similac Sensitive for spit up) but there is also Enfamil AR. The thickened feeds helped tons!

Also, frequent burping. Like stop and burp him every 2 oz. That helps too.
