Progesterone In Oil ? for IVF Ladies

This is the only IVF med I haven't already purchased...do  you guys remommend the seaseme seed oil or the ethyl oleate?

They said over the phone that the ethyl oleate is a little thinner so I am thinking that is a good thing?  It is $10 more a vial but if it hurts less or has less side effects I will buy that one.

TIA!

  • I have been on both. I got a rash with ethyl oleate on my last FET and my RE thought I might have had a reaction to the carrier, so she switched me to seaseme oil. I didn't  get a rash this hit but I did notice the my butt was more sore this time than the previous 2 cycles. GL!

  • I have the sesame oil because insurance doesn't cover the ethyl oleate, I did my first injection tonight and so far it isn't even sore.  I did heat before and after.

Oh yes I forgot the skinny needle part.  I am using the same needles as I did for the menopur IM shots.  A big one to draw it up and the thinner one to do the shot.

  • i recommend neither.

I recommend Olive Oil. It's not as thin as ethyl oleate, but IMO is a much more gentle oil, and i've never heard of anyone have a reaction to it. Reactions to sesame are EXTREMELY common, and i've heard of people reacting to the ethyl oleate as well.

    Good luck.

  • Supposedly the ethyl oleate works better because it's thinner and leaves more of a bump.  That stuff BURNED, though and made me sore all day.  I switched to Sesame Oil and had no problems.  I think try one and if it bothers you switch it up.  I was also fine with cottonseed oil, which is a little thinner than sesame oil.

  • I did my first PIO in ethyl oleate tonight and it wasn't any different from the IM menopur except that it didn't burn like the menopur did.  I found it to be a very easy shot, no pain at all.  I put the bottle of PIO in my bra (saw that tip on here) for 10 min to get it warm and then drew it up with the big needle, switched to the small needle and then DH did the shot.  After the shot I massaged the area for a couple minutes and then put a hitting pad on it.  The oil appears to have absorbed fine and I don't have a lump.

Also I didn't have any pain or soreness from the IM shots I have been doing daily while stimming.  I don't know if that will change with the thicker oil shot, but I will let you know.

  • Also, I would check to see if you insurance covers it.  I don't have insurance coverage for my IVF meds, but they do cover PIO.  PIO is used to maintain pregnancy, so they cover that.
