Working moms or those in HR come in por favor

Once my short-term disability is up in March, I would like to work from home three days a week until LO is a little older and daycare is cheaper ;) What is the best and most professional way to ask for the time off? I will be going to HR soon to discuss my maternity leave and plan to ask them while I'm there.

  • If you like I can email you my proposal. It includes a modified works schedule for the first month that I'm back which you can just edit for your own desired schedule.

  • If you have a good relationship with your boss and you think this person would would support the idea, I'd also tell him/her about it before you talk to HR since (s)he may have a lot of influence on the decision.
  • Be prepared to discuss your child care plans while you're working from home.  Most companies don't feel you can adequately do your job from home while providing full-time care to an infant, and expect to see that you have some arrangement in place (a nanny/babysitter there during your "work hours" to care for LO so you can focus on work) before considering a work-from-home arrangement for new moms as well.  It would still be a lot cheaper than daycare if you could find a college kid to work a few hours each of those days so you'd have some dedicated work time without interruption.
