Thrush?

I'm sure this has been asked a million times before and if so I'm sorry. I have noticed the past few days that my son has white spots on his tongue. At first I thought it was left over milk/ spit up left in his mouth, but now I'm not so sure. Does thrush cause the baby to cry or show any discomfort? How did you know that your baby had it? I EBF and don't want things to get worse if this is what I think it is. TIA!

Re: Thrush?

  • My ped said thrush comes out in a white film on the tongue, inner cheeks and the roof of the mouth. Also it doesnt rub off easily, and will transfer to your nipples if you are breastfeeding.

  • I would have it checked out. It's not that serious or anything but we are going through this right now and I will tell you if it gets transferred to your breasts it is painful.  My nipples were peeling and sore and one time when I was away from him and had to pump it started bleeding and the milk was pink.  We are being treated with Nystating and I have to put it in his mouth and on my nipples 4 times a day for 2 weeks. Kind of a pain.

  • Some babies aren't bothered by it, but if it's bad enough the baby may show signs of discomfort while eating, and may cry for no reason, also, may have a diaper rash associated with it. We also took Nystatin.
