I see so many people talking about how IUI is a waste of time and they are jsut trying to "get through it" to get to the IVF. Does anyone really get pregnant from IUI?
We have been TTC for 2 years but are just getting into figuring out what's the issue and geting a HUGE education in IF. We have had one appt with the RE and he told us that the best case scenario would be if the SE was bad because then he could jsut do IUI which is simple and easy and voila! Magical baby! Now reading all of this I am not so sure. We don't even know yet what the issues are (still waiting for DH to go get the SA) but wondering if anyone knosw statistics for success of IUI or if people have personal stories. Thanks for sharing.
Re: Does anyone get pregnant from IUI?
Yes people get pregnant from IUI's.

IUI success rates here. IVF success rates on SART. So much depends on your diagnosis.
I have never heard anyone "getting through" IUIs, at most I've heard people state that they wished they moved on to IVF faster had they known that IUI would not work for them (most REs recommend 3 failures before moving on to a more aggressive treatment, be it medication type or procedure). I suppose some insurance companies require IUIs before IVF coverage, but if you're part of the lucky many without IVF coverage, then it doesn't apply. I don't think an RE would have a problem if a patient wanted to be particularly aggressive and move to IVF sooner rather than later.
IVF is not a first choice simply because it's expensive and invasive. You have to take days off of work, often at short or no notice. It's physically and emotionally demanding. People don't usually just jump in and spend 20k unless they absolutely have to.
And yes, people really do get pregnant from IUI.
I got pregnant with IUI. Unfortunately it ended in a CP. But yes, plenty of people do get pregnant with this method. I would imagine it wouldnt be for those diagnosed with male infertility but that is just my opinion.
We personally are moving on to IVF this cycle not b/c of my ability to get pregnant but b/c of RPL. With IVF we will be able to test the embryos first. Good luck to you!
You might be noticing a lot of posts from the people who are currently going through IVF because they need a lot of support from the rest of us right now.
But IUI can be successful, as long as all the factors are right. DH and I cannot do IUI because he doesn't have enough sperm. Right now we are saving and preparing for IVF.

My DH and I are starting out with IUI because it's very cost effective for us and not invasive and at this point in time, we're not sure if our IF issue is me (possible endo) or him (S/A came back with low count and morphology). If we're not PG after a few more IUI rounds, then we'll need to explore other options but we're holding out hope that putting what swimmers we DO have in the right place at the right time does the trick.
Just a side note, I have neighbors that are a same sex couple and they conceived their son via IUI + DS and now she is PG again with a little girl, again IUI + DS. I know chances are they didn't suffer from IF, but just so you know it is VERY possible to get PG with IUI.
Me: 32 - Stage II Endo / DH: 36 - Low count and morphology (1%)
IUIs 1-3 BFN, lap Dec. 2010, IUIs 4-6 BFN
IVF w/ICSI #1 - ER 2/8: 24R 19M 9F ET 2/13 2-5 day blasts (no frosties) = BFP - b/g twins!

That's silly.
Women are pregnant all the time from IUI's.
Why wou;d you want to waste tens of thousands of dollars and months of pain and agony with IVF when you haven't even tried a few IUI's first?
I was pregnant with my third IUI. I then had to terminate because it was ectopic. That baby was very real. The only reason I'm in IVF is because my tubes are blocked.
That's my take.
The Conception Craze
1/2009- TTTC
After 7 rounds of clomid and HcG, Three failed IUI's with an ectopic pregnancy, two shots of methotrextate, ER visits, breaks, low (3%) morphology One IVF cycle (lupron, gonal-F) that ended in another ectopic, more methotrexate, A Lap to disconnect both tubes, remove endo and a hydrosalphinx, . . .we are finally expecting TWINS from FET#1!
1.11. 2011: Beginning FET cycle!
3.11.11- FET! (DH's birthday!) 2 blasts transfered!
3.20.11- BETA #1 BFP!!! 272! (9dp5dt)

4.8.11- U/S #1. . TWINS!!! . . .TWO BOYS!
9.10.11-My beautiful Boys arrive unexpectedly at 28 weeks, 6 days.
:::Butting in from PAIF::: I got pregnant from an IUI. My diagnosis is PCOS and DOR. DH has no MFI. I was a slow responder and was on high dose of Gonal-f. I am currently pregnant with twins. This was our last shot with IUI. The RE didn't think it would work and we would have to do IVF but we decided to give it a try before moving on. I don't think it's a waste of time. I would rather try with an IUI first rather than going right into IVF. That's just me, I know there are a lot of different opinions about this.
GOOD LUCK!
History of IF and 2.5 years TTC. The day we were to start our first IUI we received a call that changed our lives forever and 10 month old Olivia joined our family. Shortly thereafter we got a surprise BFP and baby 2 is due July 5, 2012
