Babies: 0 - 3 Months

FF at night?

Right now I'm pumping for breastmilk bottles during the day and nursing LO at night. We're considering formula for the night time feedings to start with. I've heard babies tend to sleep longer on formula than with breastmilk. I'm looking for feedback from moms that feed their LO formula. How long does your LO sleep at night on formula? (I realize every baby is different, just looking for your experiences.)

Note: Our LO is 2 1/2 wks old

Re: FF at night?

  • Our DS (also named Logan)! is formula fed and until about a week and a half ago, he was giving us MAYBE 3.5 hours between feedings, but usually more like 2.5-3...it was frustrating.

Just in the past week or so, he's started taking more at his bedtime feed, has been giving us about 5 hours between feeds...let's hope it stays this way!

  • We also do both pumped BM and FF, reserving FF for night time. Once we got him on the right formula, he's gone as long as 5 hours at night but it's usually 3-4

  • we typically get about 3 hours. Although, sometimes it is 2-2.5 depending on her mood/hunger. Like last night, she slept from 10:30-1:30, but then 1:30-3:30 was up even after a feeding. Finaly 3:30 went down until 8:30.
  • My LO sleeps on average 2.5-3 hours at a time. Occassionally we get lucky and he will go 4-5.
  • I just started doing this recently.  DS is 2 months old, though.  He was STTN, but waking up at 5 am or 5:30 am when his "official" wake time is 6 am.  So I wanted to keep him asleep for a little while longer.  At first, I gave him his usual 5 oz at bedtime, but he woke up at his usual early time.  Then one night, I made a large bottle of formula thinking "if he doesn't eat it all, oh well."  (I get upset if he "wastes" breast milk.)  He ate 7 oz and we had to wake him up at 6 am!  I was amazed at the amount he ate, but the results were exactly what we wanted, so I will continue.  I want to experiment one day to see how long he will sleep, but I'm kinda scared to mess with what is working for us.  You can always try and see what happens.  HTH!
