....I guess you don't need a crib soother? you know, one of those oceans sounds things. I registered for both, but that seems redundant, right? I suddenly feel like I don't know anything about babies. Yikes.
You will find things that say you don't need either - a crib is for sleeping and both can keep your kid awake. I had a mobile on one end of the crib that I used to amuse her, but I always placed her facing the other end of the crib to sleep. I didn't use a crib soother. I think that they are two different things.

I used a crib soother as well. She did not use the mobile at night time. But used the soother. We did cry it out starting at 6 mos old and she would trun it on until she feel asleep. That's how we knew she was asleep. It quit playing over and over again.
I view the mobile as something stimulating for LO to look at while he's in his crib, while the soother is something that will hopefully lull him to sleep. I'm planning on getting both.
I got the seahorse because everyone raves about it.
I don't want a mobile or other musical contraption in the crib. Maybe some sort of crib toy/soother when he's old enough to turn it on and amuse himself in the morning, but while he's small, I'd prefer the crib be for sleeping, not for being stimulated. We'll have a sound machine in his room for white noise or nature sounds or whatever it is that soothes him.
I kind of feel like I'm the only one not using some kind of mobile though. All of my friends have a loud obnoxious fisher price mobile for their baby.

Our mobile is just for looks. I never once turned it on because I thought it was obnoxious.

There are all sorts of crafty, non-electric, non-plastic mobile options just for gazing at. If you look on Etsy be prepared to be amazed by cuteness! My MIL wants to make things for the baby ans was looking for ideas, so I suggested an origami animal mobile (she used to live in Japan and has this skill) or one made of hand-sewn felt animals.

For some reason, I really want that seahorse soother.
IMO, the mobiles and the soothers serve different purposes. Get both if you want them.
